LOL i heard about the skadden summer slapping an associate too. Apparantly, the summer is fine and will probably still get an offer.

Things are going pretty well. My first week was super chill. I did some corporate deal work and basically did like 3 hours of work a day, and that's because it took me a shit ton of time just to figure out what I was doing. Seems like all of the work is really for our benefit so we can figure out what the firm does. I doubt the firm actually is giving us the assignments because they NEED any type of support from me or the other summers LOL.

I like a few of the summers at the firm. For the most part, everyone is still pretty uptight, so I assume they will get more chill over the next few weeks as we bond and have more events together.

Drunk story of me:

Early on in the summer I got way too drunk at an event. Just prior to the summer I decided to get back in the dating/hookup scene. At said event an associate brought a friend that I proceeded to drunkenly, shamelessly, and poorly try to hook up with. I don't think it was THAT bad but I'm also not too forward. The next day the other summers were ribbing me and the associate was noticeably colder towards me the rest of summer. Luckily pretty much everyone at the event was very junior

Hookup story of a friend:

Managed to hookup with one of the support staff at an event. Out of everyone I know he's most likely to make partner, and clearly since he was a summer he's been on the right track. Unfortunately for me my firm wasn't very attractive...

I don't even write a legal memo, since this law firm does not do a legal memo. I was wondering if biglaw summer associates also do this type of low-skilled stuff. I am turned off by the type of work I do here.

I'm surprised anybody is doing work that's billed to a client at all. When I said "bill," we're just told to track the hours we're working and bill it to an SA acct #. I haven't done a single minute of work that actually earned the firm money. We're told that if we do work that's going to be billed to a client, the assigning attorney will let us know.

Dat tax doe.

Yea, a lot of my work thus far has been billable to a client. I expect it to get written off, though.

I can't imagine a client that would be okay paying a Summer. Very doubtful any of it is being billed.

Are you at no-offer firms?

Edit - maybe you got assigned something urgent, but at least stop bragging about it. Literally no one else cares. This feels like 1L all over again.
Being macho about billables at any time is pure Stockholm but doing it as a SA is the definition of risible since nobody cares at all. I don't even think we look at how much summers bill when deciding on offers. The only way it could possibly matter is if they just said nah and didn't bothering entering their time for the whole summer.

My friend Juan-Carlos did bong hits with the file clerk after a firm event, so I assume you'll be fine.

Apparently even when you do slap an associate, you're still up for getting an offer. Must take a lot to lose it.

The worst summer in the history of my firm got puking drunk at a firm event and told a partner that his wife had "killer tits." He did not get an offer and slapping someone seems worse. I wouldn't be so sanguine.

I heard of a guy who was no-offered at my firm because he straight up just didn't do like 2 or 3 assignments.

A summer several years ago at my firm did something similar and got no offered. I'm sure it depends pretty heavily on the circumstances.

Get wasted at a summer event and slap an associate in front of everybody for no good reason: no offer.
Get sexually harassed and slap the associate who just opened up the firm to a lawsuit: probably still get an offer.

Well, I billed to it a legitimate client and matter number. I don't expect it to stand, though. That's the point I'm making.

Mostly orientation, ie. lots of food, socializing, and HR paperwork. Afterwards more socializing but with lots of drinking.

Depends on the firm. If big summer class in NYC, then don't plan anything after first day, you'll likely have some kind of hang out social event after work. I would just wait until after the first day when they'll give you a schedule of what you'll do for rest of summer, then you can plan around it. First weekend plans should be fine though.
