How did you apply to Kirkland's NYC office. The online application only lets you apply to LA. Did you just send an email?

they are coming on campus at H for their NYC office only. Chi office said no 1Ls period.

Which chicago firms even have diversity SA?? V50??
OP here: lots of Chi firms have 1L Diversity programs, some are V50 and some aren't.

My interviews were McAndrews and McDermott. Went well. McDermott was 8 people, 2 at a time, 30 min each. McAndrews was 5 people, one at a time, 30 min each. What a long day.

Chicago has lots of diversity 1L SAs. I interviewed at Reed Smith, Katten, and Faegre last year. Don't know about Faegre, but I'm 99% sure that RS and K have their programs again.

It means you aren't IP/diverse or didn't find a cure for cancer in your previous life (or your applying to a more popular office or are K-JD or any number of other reasons particular to the firm, the office, and you), so, for you, they'll want to see some academic excellence before they interview.
I'm IP and published some papers showing potential cures/treatments for two types of cancers...and yet Jones Day wanted to wait for my grades lol several other firms proceeded with interviews beforehand though

was looking into 1L diversity programs and some don't specify a scholarship amount.

do some diversity fellowships not include scholly money for the summer after your SA? Most i've seen offer 5-7K, but a couple don't specify or make mention of scholly so I'm wondering if anyone knows

 but tbf to anon, I first thought the scholarship money was the income you would earn as a SA. But then I found out the scholarship money was on top of the 30k summer earnings. My reaction

OP here. Don't get me wrong, 30K and no scholly is more than good enough. Jw since some places offer 30K AND scholly, which I agree, is like

this may be a dumb question, but for the vault rankings are they ranking the entire firm nationally or only one specific office of the location listed?

"How does Vault come up with its list of the Top 100 firms in the country? The first step is to compile a list of the most renowned law firms in the land by reviewing the feedback we receive from previous surveys, consulting our previous lists, poring over legal newspapers, talking to lawyers in the field and checking out other published rankings. We then asked these top firms to distribute a password-protected online survey to their associates. This year, nearly 17,000 attorneys returned anonymous surveys to Vault. Associates from all over the country and the world responded. We heard from lawyers in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Miami, Cleveland, Seattle, Orlando, Phoenix and Atlanta, plus many other domestic as well as international locations. The online survey asked attorneys to score each of the law firms on a scale of 1 to 10 based on how prestigious it is to work for the firm. Associates were asked to ignore any firm with which they were unfamiliar and were not allowed to rank their own firm.

We collected all the surveys and averaged the score for each firm. The firms were then ranked in order, starting with the highest average prestige score as No. 1 on down to determine the Vault Top 100. Remember that in the Top 100, Vault is not assessing firms by profit, size, lifestyle, number of deals or quality of service; we are ranking the most prestigious law firms based on the perceptions of currently practicing lawyers at peer firms.

Many thanks to the nearly 17,000 survey respondents for your insights"

Their methodology report doesn't really shed insight into that...I'm sure someone on TLS has filled filled out that form before; however, I doubt they're lurking this thread.

I don't think it's a dumb question, but why does it matter?

It doesn't really.

I just noticed that while some firms are ranked in the Vault 100, they aren't ranked in Chicago.
For instance, Perkins Coie is #59 in the Vault 100 but not listed in Vault's Best Firms in Chicago, despite having an office here; whereas McDermott is listed as #55/100 and #9 in Chicago. So I thought maybe their Seattle office (home office) is was what got them on the 100. Not that it matters, just poking around and it made me curious. Just seemed that if you're one of the top 100 in the nation, you should also be one of the top 25 in your city unless your city is crazy stacked with powerhouses at the top of the vault 100.

"Each regional ranking is based on associates who actually work in that region. For example, an associate from the San Francisco office of a national firm was only allowed to vote in the Northern California category. This year's regional rankings include the following locations: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Miami, the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, New York City, Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, Southern California, Texas and Washington, DC.

Rankings: best law firms in Each U.S. Region

Top Ranked"

In the case of the V100 rankings, people from everywhere are voting based on presitge. It could be the case that associates who are only allowed to vote on their particular region know which firms are stronger in their regions.
