Asked KD the same question earlier today, he said Alternates are fully eligible for the lottery and that they should be accepted.

I picked up three more preselects as the day went on. The sky is really not falling guys, chins up. The way this all transpired is hard but my impression was that it is not our ie. UVA's fault. It seems symplicity, software I think a lot of schools buy, just shorted on us. Let's keep ourselves together here.

Explain how. Just replace "got owned bidding all DC" with "got owned bidding all NY" and it's pretty similar. There's undoubtedly a handful of top grade students who bid on NY instead of DC unlike last year, and are playing Pokemon with the preselects right now. Wait for them to shed these August 4-7 and see how many trickle down. A lot of people were talking about having 2-5 alternates turn into preselects last year. With the cap a full TEN lower this year, I'd expect that number to be even higher.

Running some quick numbers yields something like 1,500 total interviews for NY (very rough numbers, looks somewhat comparable to last year).
1500/20 = 75, so that means that 75 (corresponds to about the top 20%) students could fill up completely on NY interviews. Obviously, a good chunk of those people will have bid on DC and won't be filling up their schedules with all (or any) NY interviews. So then even more interviews are coming down the pipes.
I don't mean to say that things aren't looking really shitty for people at median, for some people, that is the case. But I'd be surprised if a sizeable chunk in the top third or so don't end up with at least ten interviews.

10 nyc alternates with three firms left. Having five of those turn to preselect would make me a happy camper.

Posting #s:
Median here focusing on NYC: 3 preselects, 1 alt; secondary home market: 3 preselects, 2 alts; 1 alt in Cal.
Surprised by # of alts in NYC. Still waiting on Chadbourne.

6 preselects and 4 alternates, though, still pretty solid for median. Hopefully you can pick up some of those alternates and a couple of lottery selections, bump you up past ten.
Has anybody heard today from any of the firms still on KD's list from last night?

Does anyone have any idea how likely these NYC alternates are to turn into Preselects?

Impossible to say. But as I said, last year's thread seemed to find a number of people talking about 2-5 turning into preselects. I would imagine that the higher GPA you have, the more likely an alternate would turn into a preselect (with the assumption that the people directly ahead of you will likely need to shed interviews, and they would fall to you). But that's only an intuition.

Assuming the fact that people can only keep 20 interviews instead of 30 will help with this as well.

Right, exactly, forgot to mention that. Though I don't know how many people actually kept 30 interviews, seemed like a number of people trimmed it down to mid-high 20s. But there's still a drop there.
