I have an offer from a government agency that I would accept absent a firm offer, if I give firms notice of this and asked for an expedited process would that autoding me?
non-diversity SAs, DC market, top 1/3 (? probably but they don't release stats for this semester) at GULC

Not saying that its the reason I got the offer, but it might be a good idea for smaller firms, especially those in secondary markets. I interviewed with a hiring partner at a callback interview. I sent a thank you note the next day to him (and the other lawyers) and he replied back with an offer. I wouldn't do it at a large NYC firm though.LetsGoMets wrote:I have a sense that post-interview thank yous are more useful/expected in public sector than private, but might be more a function of the number and interviews and structure of the process.Hand wrote:I dunno man, I just send a quick two liner after an interview, the risk of someone finding that annoying seems lower than the risk of someone thinking I don't know proper etiquette for this shit, but I doubt most people will care either wayBigZuck wrote:Yeah basically there just doesn't seem to really be any upside. I've seen practicing attorneys on here openly complain about getting them (or at best, they don't care). No upside with the possible downside of maybe misspelling a name or sending it to the wrong person or whatever is enough for me to say don't do it.Anonymous User wrote:Does this stem from the line of thinking that there is just too much chance of a mistake/typo or that it's an outdated practice? Curious because I've heard so many conflicting thoughts on thank yousBigZuck wrote:Friendly reminder BUMPBigZuck wrote:no thank yous ever
Also, this is super anecdotal but I interviewed in some of the more genteel markets and it seemed to not make any difference with anyone I know, but obviously that doesn't really mean anything.
Honestly, I could maybe see doing it if you made some sort of real connection with someone or if it's like a really old judge who might want that personal touch or something. I just assume that most TLSers would send thank yous in a hamfisted/gunnery/awkward way so that's why I say don't bother.
If you can pull it off appropriately then knock yourself out I guess.

By the way, to whomever was asking about DOJ ENRD, the interview I knew of became an offer, apparently last week.

Has anyone accepted an offer with the USAO-EDNY. I realize that we are supposed to receiving follow up contact information soon...did anyone ask what specific dates we could expect to hear from them?

Maybe not autoding, but they aren't going to line up to take you to the ball. Did you network with any of the firm decision makers? If not, top 1/3 at GULC looks a lot like your GW application did, a safety.Anonymous User wrote:I have an offer from a government agency that I would accept absent a firm offer, if I give firms notice of this and asked for an expedited process would that autoding me?

Anybody get a callback after a phone/skype interview? Care to share what that's like? Was invited to my first one, and I'm not sure how to do well in an interview when I can't rely on body language.

Does anyone know anything about the Bronx Defenders? I have an interview with them soon. Are they a good office to intern at for the summer? What do interns do?

Could any 2/3L or attorney speak to whether getting dinged on a 1L SA CB make a firm less likely to give a CB at OCI? Can see it going both ways as far being a known quantity

Well I know they "encourage you to apply for next summer" every single time so take that for what it's worth. I've heard it a few times now. It is getting uncomfortably close to "It's not you, it's me."Anonymous User wrote:Could any 2/3L or attorney speak to whether getting dinged on a 1L SA CB make a firm less likely to give a CB at OCI? Are DC judges no longer looking for interns? I sent out 80+ apps last week (because I'm a procrastinator.) I don't expect to get any calls because I heard DC is competitive. Does anyone here actually know?

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2018
So, I was able to get 2 interviews through my schools Spring oci but the 2nd is scheduled to start at the same time the 1st is scheduled to end and career services told me that neither firm has any more open time slots, so they basically told me to show up late and apologize. But has anyone that has done oci know if the 2nd interviewer is going to be so annoyed that I'm an auto ding? Should I tell the 2nd interviewer I was doing another interview and if so how? Will the 1st interview even last the whole time? Thanks.

Depending on which firm you like more, better call might be to leave the first one a few mins early, and let them know why.

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2018
This happens a lot at OCI. The basic rule: if you let it affect your confidence or your interview performance, that's obviously a bad look. If you can shrug it off and explain it properly, you're almost always going to be fine. Everyone knows OCI is stressful and part of what they're looking to see is how you handle stressful situations. Some interviewers might be assholes and take offense, but that's out of your hands anyway. Show up unfazed and prosper.Anonymous User wrote:So, I was able to get 2 interviews through my schools Spring oci but the 2nd is scheduled to start at the same time the 1st is scheduled to end and career services told me that neither firm has any more open time slots, so they basically told me to show up late and apologize. Go find the recruiter or the interviewer for the second firm in the morning and let them know the situation and that you might be a little late to your interview. Happens all the time.Anonymous User wrote:So, I was able to get 2 interviews through my schools Spring oci but the 2nd is scheduled to start at the same time the 1st is scheduled to end and career services told me that neither firm has any more open time slots, so they basically told me to show up late and apologize. Nothing yet. Sent a polite request for an update recently. Waiting to hear back.
I'm kind of assuming that maybe we're alternates and they're waiting to hear back from their first round of offerees before they either offer or ding us.

Don't ask me how I know this, but at least some big firms look rather closely at your writing sample/cover letter. The TLS mantra of "as long as it's not shit, it's ok" is not universally true, at least for 1L SAs.

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2018
Anyone involved with San Jose district court externships? I've applied/interviewed for a few but they've been pretty quiet for a few weeks now. Not sure if that means they're still deliberating or I was dinged and ghosted.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
