Re: Michigan 2014 OCI Thread!!!!!!!
I am a Michigan alum here. I wanted to comment on a few things.
First, I am surprised that everyone did not know prior to OCI that Chicago is a much, much harder market to break into than New York. I did OCI three years ago and it was common knowledge then. If you look at the numbers of total SA spots per city, this becomes very apparent.
Second, grades trump all. If you do not exceed a firm's threshold, no amount of "relevant" work experience will matter. The flip side is if you have exceptional grades but no work experience, no firm will be out of play. I can say that both from personal experience and knowing the outcome of numerous friends. Of course take this as a pure anecdote: I went straight-though, had good grades, and got offered 15+ CBs. And I would not say my results were atypical for the top of the class, even those without any or very limited work experience. I also doubt that work experience helps as much as law review. It's possible, I guess. But if you control for grades, law review appears to only slightly help anyway.
Of course, this is not to say work experience does not matter or that you shouldn't get it. Once you clear a firm's gpa threshold, work experience can help you demonstrate that you are a mature candidate who can be entrusted to act responsibly. And older, mature candidates may get better grades, or otherwise do better in law school. So I definitely agree that for most people delaying law school can often be the right answer.
Anyways, good luck everyone. If you don't have an offer, please please keep mass mailing and hustling any other way you can.

The sample's bias being that it may be that the people who have gotten CBs are the ones who are willing to ask what's going on with my CBs and thus are the folks among my friends that I know about.Anonymous User wrote:The sample's bias being?Anonymous User wrote:Maybe my sample has some bias, but the vast majority of the people I've talked to (including people around median) have some CBs, and I know several people who have the V10 minus a couple firms.
For sample purposes for future years, I had a strong GPA and good work experience. I did about 19 screeners and got 9 callbacks. All of the callbacks were V20 firms. The bunch of firms outside the V20 that I screened with didn't offer me CBs. The ones in the V10 did with a couple exceptions.

Has anyone gotten offers? If so, which market? Or which firm, if you don't mind saying.

Re: Michigan 2014 OCI Thread!!!!!!!
I think a lot of classmates stopped browsing/posting on this thread since OCI ended. However, it still can be of use to discuss offers so we have a general timeframe for particular firms' CB-->offer period.
My first CB is Friday. Then I have 3 next week (all Chicago).
Good luck to everyone. This is the homestretch. Bring it home and convert those CBs.

Yes on the offers. I know a number of people with offers from Skadden, Sullivan and Cromwell, Davis Polk, Simpson, etc.

Oh no, that wasn't even a callback. Just got a ding from the screener I had. That's why the whole "if anyone cares at this point". (I take it you meant you "got snail mail ding")
Has anyone from Michigan gotten Cahill offers yet? I know other threads have people saying they got offers already.

Cahill just started interviewing here a few years ago. Discussed in it's chamber associates profile. That explains the low number of associates.

Re: Michigan 2014 OCI Thread!!!!!!!
Just because no one has posted info regarding a firm on this site, don't be confident there haven't been offers. I don't want to post information about an offer here so not to out myself. ( and many classmates don't even look at this thread).
