Drinker Philly last Friday, but it sounds like the office is trying to finish CBs since so many local schools have been done with OCI for weeks. Chi office is probably on a different timeline.

I'm the anon #1 above who accepted a firm. Firm is in Chicago, but I'm not going to provide any other info (too easy to out me).

I would love for you to explain how the act of clearing up five callbacks slots that will hopefully go to other UChicago students in limbo is not helpful.

Because that's not how it works. It's not as if you decline a CB and the firm says "another spot is open, lets call someone up." Firms are good at knowing their yield - they realize most people will decline a CB/offer, and budget accordingly.

+1. I asked the hiring partner at my firm how big the summer class size will be, and he said: "Depends on how many people accept our outstanding offers!"

Declining a CB does absolutely nothing.

It's getting stupid. I scheduled my CBs in a certain way, with guidance from OCS, so that I could cancel some and hopefully free up CB spots for others.

No one should be made to feel like a dick for doing that.

Whoa, chill out. Nobody is being a dick or making you feel like one. Congratulations on your offer, that's fantastic. I just worry about saying things like that, because it creates false hope since it's not how CB/offers work.

edit: in the spirit of all that, how is everyone else doing? I'd love to hear about current offers (though I realize too much detail might out you)

Have you learned nothing from law school? There is no right answer.

Sure, some firms are so big that they call back enough people and have a good enough sense of their yield that canceling one CB has no impact on the process.

On the other hand, some firms are small enough that if enough people cancel CBs, the firm will need to make up for it and call someone on the "waitlist." There are enough stories of delayed callbacks to know that it happens (even if it is a rare occurrence.). Also, it almost certainly helps people that already have a CB. If a firm calls back 6 UChicago students and 3 cancel, that is significantly less competition to be facing for a firm that wants a UChicago kid.

One thing is certain: doing more callbacks when you know which firm you are going to accept helps no one.

Thank you to the person who canceled CBs. At the very least, I and a few other people in this thread appreciate it.
