Anyone else sitting here with no callbacks? Slightly frustrating after all the talk about the market rebounding and professors/partners guaranteeing we would all find jobs

START MASS MAILING. This is not a bad option, and it works.Anonymous User wrote:Anyone else sitting here with no callbacks? Slightly frustrating after all the talk about the market rebounding and professors/partners guaranteeing we would all find jobs
Here are some general tips:
- Start now, because soon the jobs will all be gone. You guys have the benefit of OCI being a few weeks earlier, which should kick your ass into gear at the right time.
- Go on NALP to look up firms and just go down the list, emailing the hiring partner, cc'ing the recruiter.
- Keep your email short and sweet, but make sure to describe some specific projects that you worked on. Recruiters don't want to see generic job descriptions.
-If you have any reason that you'll be in the area (i.e. other callbacks, visiting family) mention that in your email. This part is really helpful.
I was around median last year and got a handful of callbacks doing this fairly late into the game (late September). They were mostly in secondary markets, but I hope I don't have to tell you how that is SO much better than nothing.
Hopefully this helps some of you guys. Good luck.

Median-ish here, nearly struck outAnonymous User wrote:Anyone else sitting here with no callbacks? Slightly frustrating after all the talk about the market rebounding and professors/partners guaranteeing we would all find jobs
Feel that schools and staff in general are more optimistic than warranted about prospects for average students
People in my section were much more realistic and we've been worrying about getting jerbs since the first semester
Firms will first CB interviewees with good grades, and if they still have spaces left it's luck + soft factors for the rest of the gang
Definitely time to do targeted mass emailing - home market, NYC, secondary markets with connections, MLaw alums

Even with CBs should we be mass-mailing? What's a safe number to avoid mass mailing?

Don't know your gpa, but my work experience helped get me numerous CBs where I was at or below the 25% percentile offer gpa.Anonymous User wrote:I have a couple years of really good work experience and a whole 3 employers seemed to have been impressed during interviews. Maybe my sample has some bias, but the vast majority of the people I've talked to (including people around median) have some CBs, and I know several people who have the V10 minus a couple firms.

Exactly. So where does the "trend" come from? Having a couple of friends who got cbs doesn't mean that "People with work experience killed". It is all about the markets, personality, GPA, etc. as a whole. Is there any data showing that people with work experience do better at OCI?Druid wrote:The trend outweighs an individual experience.Anonymous User wrote:I have a couple years of really good work experience and a whole 3 employers seemed to have been impressed during interviews. There is no "safe" number of CBs - get that idea out of your head. Mass mail until you have at least one offer. Mass mail yesterday. Period.Anonymous User wrote:Even with CBs should we be mass-mailing? What's a safe number to avoid mass mailing?

Re: Michigan 2014 OCI Thread!!!!!!!
Almost every employer I talked to said my previous work experience was an advantage. Many said things to the effect of "people who have work experience tend to be better prepared after law school." I attribute work experience as a major factor for my moderate success at OCI.Anonymous User wrote:Exactly. So where does the "trend" come from? MoFo Tokyo CB. It is a phone interview and if you pass that test they move on to a skype interview, apparently.

What does it mean if you've heard nothing from a firm (and your respective interviewer) that has already sent out CBs and dings?

Re: Michigan 2014 OCI Thread!!!!!!!
Kirkland Chi ding (finally) and Weil NY ding.
Anyways, I think its like law review - if you're interviewer was on law review, they'll probably see it as this valuable prestigious thing that shows you have this work ethic and attention to detail and all that. If they weren't, they think its this ivory tower academic BS that has no real practical application.
If you're interviewer had WE before JD, they probably think that that's the right way to do it, and will be more impressed by people that do. I think having it thus opens a lot more doors with people that care about it, but its definitely a luck of the draw type of thing.
Just to add my 2 cents, I think work experience can help a lot of people. It's hard to see whether it matters if the person already has a great GPA, but I know a transfer with more callbacks than the majority of non-transfers, all good firms, and I think its because he has very relevant WE.Anonymous User wrote:Don't know your gpa, but my work experience helped get me numerous CBs where I was at or below the 25% percentile offer gpa.Anonymous User wrote:I have a couple years of really good work experience and a whole 3 employers seemed to have been impressed during interviews. Re: Michigan 2014 OCI Thread!!!!!!!
I am at Duke at the median but pretty much the same thing right? I can say that I would probably have at most 1 callback if it weren't for my 3 years WE. I was involved with a startup and it is definitely the cornerstone of my "pitch", talking about how I am entrepreneurial and can speak the same language as the corporate clients etc etc etc. My friends who are below or at median with WE are doing decent at OCI where my k-jd friends who have meh grades seem to be struggling a little more. My buddy who is k-jd with a 3.5 however has 7 callbacks already. So grades are obviously still the main selling point for anyone
