Honestly, I don't know anyone in the medianish 3.3 range (myself included) who has truly struck out; a few don't have offers yet, but got a high number of callbacks over the past few weeks. Although the foregoing is all anecdata, I am prepared to state that, based on even currently available statistics from OCI THREE YEARS AGO, if anyone with top 1/3 grades has struck out, I would call flame or would need to see a picture of that person).

Approximate class rank: Top 5%
Journal: Secondary
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: Moot Court
IP backbround: No
Significant work experience: Legal Consulting
Years out of undergrad: 5+
Prestigious undergrad: No
Other relevant factors: No.
Target markets: DC only
Type of work sought: Antitrust, M&A, Regulatory Compliance
Self-assessed interviewing ability: Above Average but not stunning
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 0
Screeners received for EIW: 14
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 5 (all DC)
Offers received: 2 V10 Offers, cancelled other 3 CBs
Accepted: V10 Firm DC Office
Commentary: I can make little sense of any objective criteria for getting callbacks from EIW. I had two really great conversations on the first day that translated to quick callbacks and offers... and everything else was a total crapshoot. Some interviews that I felt I nailed... ding! Some interviews I went in kind of winging it... Callback! It's just whether or not you 'connect' with the interviewer relative to how others did... something that is completely subjective and somewhat out of your hands.

ALSO: GRADES WILL NOT SAVE YOU. You have to meet their minimums generally, but if you're not wowing them, being at the top of the class ain't gonna save you versus someone else in the top 10%, 15%, or hell, even top 1/3. I was under no illusion I could coast b/c of grades, but I was still surprised at how stressed and worried I was through the whole process. Be warned, etc. etc.

Approximate class rank: Top 5%
Journal: GLJ
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: None
IP backbround: No
Significant work experience: Yes
Years out of undergrad: 2+
Prestigious undergrad: Somewhat
Other relevant factors: N/A
Target markets: DC/CA/NY
Type of work sought: Just want a job
Self-assessed interviewing ability: very good
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 3 screeners-->2 offers
Screeners received for EIW: 18+2 hospitality suites
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 17
Offers received: 9 offers from 10 cbs attended

Tips: don't run out of questions (you can reuse during a cb), hustle, research every firm and interviewer, mass mail, and always give the interviewer what they want to hear (if they are a lit firm, have an answer for why lit at this specific firm). Above all, act nice, friendly, and normal.

Approximate class rank: Exactly median
Journal: Secondary
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: None
IP background: No
Significant work experience: Yes
Years out of undergrad: 2+
Prestigious undergrad: Nope
Other relevant factors: N/A
Target markets: DC/CA/NY
Type of work sought: Lit
Self-assessed interviewing ability: Mediocre (See grades)
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 15 screeners
Screeners received for EIW: 18+1 hospitality suite
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 7
Offers received: 2 out of 5 attended (Going to accept at V20).

Hints: Nothing special; it's pretty much a probability game. At median, chances are in your favor so long as you are willing to hustle a little bit (don't make the mistake of bidding only DC and don't rely ENTIRELY on EIW).

Approximate class rank: Top 20%
Journal: GLJ
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: Moot
IP backbround: No
Significant work experience: No
Years out of undergrad: 0
Prestigious undergrad: Yes
Other relevant factors: No
Target markets: CA/NY
Type of work sought: Corp
Self-assessed interviewing ability: Good
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 0
Screeners received for EIW: 24
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 18
Offers received: 4 of 5 CBs attended. Cancelled the rest. Accepted offer at my top choice in my top market.

Tips: Read the legal and financial news/blogs/journal articles. Immerse yourself in the conversation. Even if you aren't fluent in the language, get to the point where you can fake it plausibly. If you want to work on sovereign debt, you should be aware of the Argentina case. Even if you can't articulate a grand theory of the pari passu clause, you should be able to demonstrate that you have a real interest and you make a concerted effort to keep up. If you want to work in patent litigation, you should be at least aware of Alice Corp. Same for any other niche practice area you are targeting.

Also, put a unique interest on your resume, but make sure you can talk about it articulately if questioned about it. Your grades speak for themselves, the interview is to find out about you.

Approximate class rank: Top 15%
Journal: Secondary
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: No
IP background: No
Significant work experience: Some
Years out of undergrad: 4 (2-yr Master's degree + work experience)
Prestigious undergrad: No
Other relevant factors: No
Target markets: DC only (big gamble)
Type of work sought: Regulatory
Self-assessed interviewing ability: Good
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 0
Screeners received for EIW: 17
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 8
Offers received: 4 of 5 CBs attended. Cancelled the rest. Accepted offer at a top DC firm.

Tips: do your homework, and act normal in your callbacks. It's not about impressing some big partner, it's about showing you're a human who can interact with the people in the firm and that you're someone the firm can trust to put in front of a client. By do your homework, I mean find something unique about each interviewer if you can. We learned how to do legal research - so look up a big case the partner you're meeting with has been working on, and ask him/her about their experience. Know extremely well and practice being confident and clear about your answers to the following two questions: "Why do you want to work at ___ firm?" and "Why you?"

Approximate class rank: Top 5% (Transfer from T1)
Journal: None
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: None
Significant work experience: No
Years out of undergrad: None
Prestigious undergrad: Somewhat (Top-25 according to USNWR)
Other relevant factors: Transfer from T1 (top 5%), No Journal or MC, etc.
Target markets: DC/NY
Type of work sought: BigLaw
Self-assessed interviewing ability: Personable, enjoyable, pretty good I think (had spring/summer internships as 1L and with every interview I had (5, I always got the offer)
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 2 screeners
Screeners received for EIW: 24 (after doing some hustle to get extras during add/drop and emailing firms I missed out on)
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 5
Offers received: 1 (cancelled 3 CBs once I got my offer)

Tips: Clearly I didn't do as well as anyone in my shoes would have thought they would do. I was very disappointed in myself, until the offer came. I think it might have had to do with my transfer status or targeting solely NY/DC. I would say, as others, definitely hustle, definitely research, and definitely don't run out of questions. It becomes awkward and clearly shows your have minimal interest in the firm...even though you may truly be interested.

Best of luck to future law students!

Approximate class rank: Bottom 33%
Journal: Secondary
Moot Court, Beaudry, etc.: No
IP backbround: No
Significant work experience: Firm work
Years out of undergrad: 1-2
Prestigious undergrad: No
Other relevant factors: No
Target markets: DC, NY, Secondary hometown market
Type of work sought: Corporate
Self-assessed interviewing ability: I am normal and presented well if employers got past the grades
Screeners or callbacks prior to EIW from mass-mailing: 4
Screeners received for EIW: 19
Callbacks received from EIW screeners: 3
Offers received: 1 V50, 1 DC midsized firm, 2 secondary market midsized firms
Accepted: V50
Commentary: Really messed up my second semester grades. Was not "doomed" as people predicted but I did have to hustle. I think this had a lot to do with trying to mentally overcome feeling inadequate during interviews due to grades and acting on par with the others they are interviewing.

To poster above: beautiful job and congratulations! To future 1ls: getting depressed when you have relatively bad grades is the single most destructive thing you can do. When significantly below median, focus on presenting yourself as confidently as possible and target practice areas that you can really speak eloquently about. At the end of the day, you go to a school with a lot if name recognition, which will at least get your resume read. One strategy that you may wish to try, and which has worked for several friends with bad grades, is to leave your GPA off your resume altogether. Especially if you have good work experience, this helps generate a good first impression in your reader and mitigates the unfavorable impression that is likely to arise when she looks at your transcript; this really does have a positive effect on callback rates/mass-mail screener rates.
