(1) Relax y'all.

(2) the math is still the same. 600 firms with at least 20 interview slots a piece. Only 370 students with a maximum of 20 interviews. If every really flocked to NYC, then there will be lots of secondary market interview slots open. You will have the opportunity to get these.

(3) As people decline interviews, you will get the opportunity to pick these up - either as alternates or lottery slots.

(4) Everyone should be mass mailing anyways. The only people who never had to mass mail ITE were LR grade-ons with work experience.

(5) Take a deep breath. OGI does not define you. This isnt pokemon and you dont have to collect interviews. You only need one job offer from the firm that is right for you. Once this period and the lottery period ends, start working on crafting special requests for the firms you didn't get interviews with. Start figuring out how to sell yourself - ask yourself, why should a firm hire me and come up with a good answer.

It was the only market they suggested I bid in addition to my home/secondary market. But I suppose it's not like they're taking 2L SAs on the moon or anything and I don't have ties anywhere else, so where the fuck were they supposed to tell me to bid.

My point is, if they could tell that a lot of people were bidding NY, why didn't KD send out an email just saying as much? They have all of the information and we have only what they feel we need to know.

In general, I agree with vamedic that things won't be so bad in the long run, but this whole process wouldn't be such a clusterfuck if we knew what was going on.

I sympathize with all the UVA students who want to blame OCS, but a median student striking out in NY is not OCS's fault. The legal economy is bad, period. If you think OCS can save you from the blood bath despite median grades, you're delusional. I still think its true that NY firms are more likely to hire 2L's without ties than firms in other markets, so "bid NY" isn't necessarily bad advice.

There's a difference between striking out and getting zero interviews from OGI. It's hard to say it's anybody's fault, though.

No you don't. Our career services staff actually care about students. They will work with you. Work with them and take initiative.

Remember two things:

(1) Career services cannot give you a job nor can they force a firm to hire you. They try to facilitate this by bringing in as many firms as possible. Likewise, people bitching about the 'top' students getting all the interviews need to remember that career services has already dropped the max number of interviews that someone can take by 33%. This is purely at the expense of top students and increases the likelihood of alternatives becoming interviews.

(2) The career services office is staffed by humans that are working their asses off for you. Be nice to them and they will appreciate that. It can go a long way. If a firm has time to interview one more candidate in a day, you want your name to be the first one that career services thinks of because you were always nice.

bitch about the fact that tons of kids are barely getting any interviews (look at the thread there are top 25% kids with 4 preselects), I don't expect OCS to give me a job, but since every other T14 kid can expect around 10 interviews how the hell is this acceptable, people deserve a chance to present themselves

And you'll probably get close to 10 after lottery. Lottery was 2-5 last year. This year it will certainly be more because of the cap taking people out of the lottery entirely. Relax this is one stage of the process.

For people bitching, this is your legal career we're talking about not their legal career. Take charge of it. I'm top 20% but I've already been mass mailing a ton and have a few callbacks set up. It's not hard.

When you mass mail, do you actually mail, or do you email? I've been going by what firms ask for on their websites (which is exclusively electronic submissions so far). Should I ignore them and mail hard copies or stick with electronic?

I've been doing both. For some of the huge firms that I know are going to be printing off my stuff and handing it to people, I e-mail because its easier. If it's a smaller firm and their site looks a little dinky, I'll presume that no one checks that e-mail especially if its a generic one like lawrecruiting@firmx.com and hard copy all fancy and crap. But, if the e-mail is consistent with the recruiter's name and also with the rest of the attorney's emails (so its not a clone e-mail addy for a recruiter's spam mail basically), I'll email. With the time the way it is too, I would probably just e-mail.

There's a really good explanation on pg 39 of the OGI Handbook. There's no official limit, but they recommend not doing it for more than 5-10 firms. Because OCS transmits these requests directly, they might intercede if you're over that number, but it says you can talk to them in special circumstances. I'm just repeating what I read in the handbook, because I have no special experience with trying to do more than 5-10. Can any 3Ls help?
