I know of several firms doing this all the way into the V50s.Anonymous User wrote:I work at said firm and can verify thisAnonymous User wrote:Speaking of free concerts. One of the V10s is taking all its summers to a Beyoncé concert.

If I could provide a quick piece of advice to any SA's or anyone else in this forum, it would be this:
Ignore smaug. Literally, anything that dude has to say is 100% garbage. Don't take what smaug says with a grain of salt; completely ignore it.
On a lighter note, I wish I was living the life of an SA eating huge delicious meals and drinking copious amounts of alcohol, doing cool shit and all for free.
Enjoy a great summer.

I've yet to do any actual work except some meetings. It's great and everyone is chill about it. Also got a gym bag and a fleece jacket.

Nope, not me. However the fact that you have multiple people mad at you should be a red flag.smaug wrote:I forget why various people are mad at me: you're the racist dude who didn't like that I banned him from chat, right?kellyfrost wrote:If I could provide a quick piece of advice to any SA's or anyone else in this forum, it would be this:

I don't like you because I have read your posts. You are an idiot. You only contribute negatively and annoyingly to the community. You are the only user I know of that had his self imposed ban celebrated so heavily by the TLS community. You are such bullshit that I would be willing to pay TLS to ban you and keep you banned!
You are an idiot. Enjoy your summer.

Not sure if it has changed in the last 3 years, but many secondary market experiences were few events and little swag. Great experiences though.Anonymous User wrote:Hows it been for the folks in secondary markets? Is there much swag/events? Im 1 of 2 SAs in a secondary market and I start next week

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
What is the protocol for asking associates out to lunch? I'm on my third week, and have had desultory conversations with a number of associates, but have only clicked with one or two. Would it be odd to reach out to associates in departments I'm interested in (who I haven't really talked to) and ask them to lunch?
Also, would it be weird to have a 1-on-1 lunch with an associate of the opposite sex?

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
none of this would be weird if you don't make it weird. It is expected that summers get to know everyone at the firm and lunches are a part of that. at least at my firm, all lunches with summers are comped so really the associates should be happy to go out for lunch etcAnonymous User wrote:What is the protocol for asking associates out to lunch? Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
Just ask. If nobody approached us/me one of the SAs would send an email to several associates who were chill and ask who was down for lunch. At least at my firm they wanted to milk their lunches for all they were worth, time permitting. Even if they don't really have time a lot are willing to grab something quick cuz it's free. And no it wouldn't be weird.Anonymous User wrote:What is the protocol for asking associates out to lunch? Our dress code is business casual. Another guy in my summer class got a little ribbing from a partner for wearing a sports coat to work on day 1 for being overdressed.Anonymous User wrote:First day of summer at "business casual" firm - of course everyone was wearing a suit, myself included. I felt bad for the one guy who actually dressed in chinos and a shirt. Clearly no offer.
In reality though, none of the partners seem to care as long as you meet some definition of business casual. Plenty of junior associates running around in khaki's and a polo shirt on a daily basis. None of the summers has dropped below dress pants and button down shirt.
On a separate note. First week had lunch all 5 days and social event with alcohol 4 out of the 5 evenings. I was told by both partners and associates that if I am ever eating lunch by myself, I'm doing it wrong. Fun, but exhausting.

Not a tremendous amount of "swag" (though after the application process and OCI, I'm pretty over law school and firm swag by this point), but there are plenty of events by my standards over the course of the summer. Only one so far, but I'd rather not have events I'm at best nominally interested in swallow all of my free time. Most importantly to me, I can get free lunch every day.Anonymous User wrote:Hows it been for the folks in secondary markets? Is there much swag/events? Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
I'm at a secondary market with 8 summers. Only a little bit of swag. We've had a few formal events over two weeks plus unofficial happy hours/alcohol in the office. It's not a 'working firm' in the sense that we have to stay late to finish assignments but still plenty of work. It's been a great mix IMO.Anonymous User wrote:Hows it been for the folks in secondary markets? Is there much swag/events? Im 1 of 2 SAs in a secondary market and I start next week

Anybody else coming from a quarter system and showing up 1-2 weeks later than the last rest of the SA class?
Or anybody had this experience in the past? Kinda bummed about missing out on 2 weeks of pay / meeting other SAs, etc.

Different anon from the "weirdo" but Weil is taking all of us to Beyonce, and I have heard that Skadden is taking all of their summers as well, so that's at least two of the V10 and there are probably others. Also know for certain that one of my friends from law school who is at a really small New York firm with 6 summers that I had never heard of (and don't remember the name now) is taking them to the Beyonce concert as well, but then again there were only 6 summers.cheaptilts wrote:why not just say the firm weirdoAnonymous User wrote:Speaking of free concerts. Anyone else at the awkward point where they have to submit a cab expense for the first time? I know it shouldn't be a big deal. But oh am I good at over analyzing ...

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
Anyone else out there really bad at ending conversations? I'm a sociable person and actually competent at holding a conversation but ending a conversation is such a challenge. I feel like there are people out there who are good at steering a conversation to a stopping point. I always feel like I'm ending it abruptly. Any tips? I was thinking of walking around with signs that say "1 minute," "30 seconds," and "10 seconds" so people are prepared when I end the conversation.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
