I just got off the phone with an old friend who is a junior partner in the NYC office of a firm that is highly rated by the esteemed "Vault" organization. Although the purpose of our call concerned a joint defense matter, we drifted to other topics. He told me that his firm will soon be raising billing rates. I asked why. The answer: "Because it's tough to keep PPP high while raising associate compensation."

Isn't that just your former college roommate?
Or a sibling/cousin's roommate - a cousins cousin might not be you.

Your cousin's cousin is not necessarily a cousin of yours. This checks out.

How long in the past did it take non-NYC major markets to move to 160/145/so on? DC ans SF/SV, for example?

I know it's set in stone already, but just to really seal the deal, someone at a market-mover firm like Ropes or P,W should get at least 5-6 colleagues together and simultaneously "leak" news of a big upward salary raise to ATL or wherever. Guaranteed to work.

Total comp (salary and bonus) for 2007 CSM first years was $235k+ in real dollars. That's where we should be targeting. It's good that $190k is apparently on the table, but it still undervalues the skill and talent incoming associates from the best schools in the country bring to the table.

Looks like if you bill 3700 hours at SMRH you might be able to get there.

Keep in mind that from 1990-2007 big law salaries increased much much faster than inflation. There has been essentially a correction in salary. Next step is 190k for 1st years.

FWIW the offices on that map match STB's US offices and the font looks similar to STB presentation format. Maybe it is STB and not PW or CSM leading the way.
