Just got an email from a NY firm saying that if I'm going to be in NY in September, I should contact recruiting and they'd arrange interviews for me. Is this an invitation or a semi-invitation? A "if you happen to be in the neighborhood stop by but we're not promising anything"?

Yes, that's what it sounds like. A callback can cost the firm, on average, $3k. That doesn't include lost attorney time. What you're probably seeing there is an overcrowded candidate pool. Do you have clear ties to NY in your resume? If you DONT, I would actually take it as a good sign... They might be testing those ties. If you DO, it's sounds like a "we'll interview you if it's free" callback offer.

If you aren't faring well otherwise, I might take it. If you're comfortable, you might call the screener or recruiter and asking what they mean. They'll try to avoid the question, but you might learn something. You can use it as an opportunity to reaffirm your interest and follow up with the screening attorney.

Could it be a firm trying to avoid paying for the expenses of a CB? Can they do that?

It depends on your phrasing, I suppose. Could they base it on expenses? Maybe not. Could they say "we already have 10 good candidates and we like this #11 but only if they're in town?" Probably.

OP here. It's a big firm that came to OCI for Chicago but I stopped by the hospitality suite and gave my packet of papers to a lady there, no interview just handed them over and exchanged pleasantries. I'm guessing though that the lack of interaction followed by a soft callback is a good sign? I have no obvious connection to NY but I'll be there for another callback so I'll make time if this actually is an interview offer.

Tends to be within the same week for NYC.

Non-NYC can be between same week and three weeks.
