Judging by my LinkedIn feed, Deloitte laid off a few seniors/managers but seem to have spared almost all new people hired last year from LLM programs.

I've heard the same thing regarding Cleary. This also comes on the heels of them announcing a one-off fellowship where they are seconding juniors to non-profits for half their salary. Any idea why Cleary is being hit so hard? I know Vault rankings don't matter a whole lot, but they're a V20 and generally very highly regarded. Cleary's RPL is pretty lousy compared to peers. Imagine part of that is large relative share of international offices (w/lower billing rates) dragging down its average, but still...

For Cleary, are you referring to the ordinary course firings that happen around this time of year every year? I wouldn't think of those as stealth layoffs. Every April/May following the spring partner meeting, the firm culls the more senior classes, firing associates who are no longer partner track (up or out) and reaches down to fire some associates in lower classes too. Can confirm Cleary has done that the last few years, including this year, probably firing between 10-20 associates annually. Associates get a significant amount of time to find a new job (while being paid). Or is the poster referring to something different?

It didn't happen to me and I am not in a class year or group that was impacted. But I heard from others: (1) more lawyers cut than in prior years, (2) people given until September to find new positions (vs December or later, which is more standard), and (3) lawyers in class years that are not usually part of the spring partner meeting lay-offs are being are being culled. Just learned from someone who got let go that Shearman & Sterling NY has been laying off junior assocs (1-2 yr) in their corporate groups.

From experience, the corporate groups at Shearman have slowed down. Well before the pandemic, there were too many warm bodies and not enough work to go around. I have no direct knowledge but have a hard time believing that a progressive-leaning firm with a female chair and voted one of the best firms for female attorneys is specifically targeting women with stealth layoffs. I have first hand knowledge of the R&G culture and this does not surprise me. Although it touts itself as being a great place for women in my experience it was as male-dominated a culture as they come.

Just because the layoffs may or may not have been disproportionately women does not mean they were targeting women. Female R&G associate here. I haven’t heard anything about layoffs, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happening. I will say that I find the culture at Ropes to be extremely supportive of women. There are tons of women in leadership, and they are very accommodating of associates (male and female) with family commitments. We as an educated body simply can’t automatically assume that any time that white males didn’t get some sort of adverse action in direct proportion to, or above, their population in a given group, that the ‘powers that be’ were purposefully targeting [insert non-white-male group here].
Correlation does not equal causation and all that.
