Have you ever tried to hire a plumber? They're in demand. They have serious skills.

My uncle's a plumber. From how he describes it, being a plumber is the truth (other than the wear and tear on your body associated with any manual labor job).

He's got a lot of back problems and his hands are pretty fucked up with arthritis. Not sure if these are common among the profession but it's taken a toll on him.

If the goal is to make $100-150k a year, you can do that with a hs degree if you're willing to work hard and deal with shit, rats, vomit and also not have a job that is "prestigious." I think becoming a plumber is a much better choice than law school for most people because you don't have to pay tuition and there will always be demand for your services. On the other hand, a lot of people who are excellent and successful as lawyers would be terrible as plumbers because they couldn't handle the filth, aren't mechanically inclined, couldn't take the wear and tear on their body, etc.

How is this any different from working Biglaw in Manhattan/Chicago Loop/SF/LA/DC and taking the train to work every day?

Not to mention the metaphorical shit and rats you deal with during the workday, and the resulting desire to vomit on a daily basis.

At least if you're a plumber, you can look at the work you did an think, "I got something done." Instead of thinking about all that editing/doc review you did for a case that gets settled/vacated/delayed for another 3 years, etc.

It blows taking the Red Line every day, but I've never dealt with shit, rats, vomit thankfully.

Teachers in flyover where I grew up start at around 50k (cheap COL though) and max out at like 110k. I think NYC starts out at around 55-60k...kind of really, really low for an expensive city, because that's what flyover places pay.

It's kind of insane though - you only work 9 months out of the year, so 50k is pretty legit. Plus a lot tutor on the side, and that's easy money.
Where?

Sincerely,
the spouse of a teacher who would love to move wherever this is. (We live in a major city and you start at 50K but the max, even with a Ph.D, is 64K).
What big city maxes at 64? =( That's pretty low. I know boston, NY, LA, D.C., maybe CHI, and Detroit all start in the 50s and max over 6 figures (Detroit may not max that high, but considering COL, the pay is great).
San Antonio.

The BLS reports the median annual salary for high school teachers was $55,360 in 2013. The best-paid 10 percent in the field made approximately $86,720, while the bottom 10 percent made $37,230.

its comical. and this is before all the new laws take effect that boost hourly pay and have higher taxes. its a terrible time to get into law.
There is a correlation between these two phrases that you should realize, potentially.

lol

Honestly, i should have done nursing undergrad or something - one of my friends made 80k starting out as a university nurse, where there's limited shit you have to deal with. Plus it's a much more portable degree than law - search indeed for nurse and there's like millions of jobs everywhere.

THe best part is that nursing has shifts though - clock in, clock out, no on call, no take home work.

San Antonio.
I mean...64k seems low without context, but San Antonio starts at 50k, and considering the cost of living difference, that'll go as far as 100k in NYC/DC/Boston. Having the potential to make 100k with that low COL would obviously be better, but 50-64k in San Antonio still isn't bad pay.

I know several nurses. One her hours are completely erratic: one week the hospital gives her 50 hrs, the next week they give her 10 hrs or no hrs. Also the degree is portable but it is not like a nurse can move anywhere in the country and immediately get a job. However, I don't disagree that nursing (or PA school) has better hours than law and more job security, with less debt than most people take on.

Not so sure about those "serious skills." I had a plumbing leak at my house last year. I hired 3 different plumbers to find and fix it. None of them could. Ended up fixing it myself with a $10 cap from Home Depot :x

Isn't that unusual though? The nurses I know work set shifts. Also I assume that means in the 10-hour week, they don't have to come in otherwise right? In law you have to usually come in anyway..so you might be sitting around in your office for 9 hours iwth nothing to do, then start billing 12 hours at 5 pm.....

As for nurses being on call - no nurses are on call 24/7. They are on call maybe like one day a week, if they are on call at all. Also a university nurse is less likely to deal with literal shit.

The awesome thing about nursing is that you can maybe do 3 12 hour shifts a week then have 4 days off. As opposed to law, where you work 6 12 hour shifts a week and are on call 24/7 anyway.
