Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
BTW a shout out to Major Lindsay and Africa. FUCK you.
Back when I was interviewing around, I chose to apply for a few jobs through them. They made me wear a suit to meet with them first. On a weekday. 45 minutes from where I work.
I go to the meeting (a few minutes late because I'm busy and in biglaw) and they start to ask me questions. I look at my watch nervously because I have a work meeting coming up. Half an hour flies by, still no end to the questions. We are reaching an hour and I basically tell them I have a full time job and have meetings I have to get to.
And let's get to the questions themselves. They tried to test my knowledge of the law. They asked me shitty behavioral questions that I haven't ever gotten in a legal interview, such as "give us an example of where you made something out of nothing?" And if someone ever did ask me that in an interview, it would probably be my first sign that I should run for the hills.
To boot, they acted all offended when I had to leave. I'm sorry I couldn't spend another hour justifying your jobs.

It's not hard. Ask if they have exclusivity.Anonymous User wrote:How do you ask them if they have exclusivity? And why does it matter to you/me whether they are the only recruiter engaged?Old Gregg wrote:They do that because they're scared you'll just apply on your own once you know the positions.Anonymous User wrote:Thoughts on headhunters that request resumes before telling you about positions?
Is this standard? I'm concerned about horror stories of headhunters spamming your resume all over the place, telling your fellow employees you are looking, etc.
Which is stupid because that typically means that they don't have exclusivity on the positions so there's no point in working with them.
If a headhunter calls me for an interesting position, I always make sure they have exclusivity.
Exclusivity means what it implies: the only way you can apply is through the recruiter. Not on your own even if you know about the position.

ya most lateral interviews are nearly same as OCIOld Gregg wrote:BTW a shout out to Major Lindsay and Africa. FUCK you.

had one or two ask me substantive questions about like writing sample and some behavioral
but there's a good chance you've been vetted before they call you in, so it's often more about fit
also fck recruiters - use a contact at the firm if u have one
if no contact (or if u dont feel comfortable reaching out to someone u barely know, etc.) use lateral.ly/laterallink/gobiglaw and just take the time to keep like a favorites folder of all the websites of firms where youd like to work....this takes time, but firms' recruiting depts like to not use recruiters if they dont have to

Wanted to jump in and say that you guys should give lateral.ly a look. Cuts out the middle man and has been superb for me thus far. Fast, transparent, no BS phone calls. Anon because, well, I'm in the middle of the lateral process myself. If anyone ends up pulling the trigger on lateral.ly let me know and I'll pm you my referral link.

If you're looking to go in-house recruiters become much more valuable IMO. My PE firm doesn't advertise jobs/post them anywhere and there is no way to directly mail a resume.
And we usually use at least 2 recruiters for most jobs so they don't have exclusivity on the jobs either

After I passed the bar a BCG recruiter reached out to me and acted very enthusiastic on the phone, then emailed me back like "nevermind" after he saw my resume.Anonymous User wrote:Anyone have experience with BCG?

I had the opposite experience going to F500 in-house. Recruiters were useless. I suppose it all depends.thisiswater wrote:If you're looking to go in-house recruiters become much more valuable IMO. My PE firm doesn't advertise jobs/post them anywhere and there is no way to directly mail a resume.

Anyone have experience with Lateral Link or Lateral.Ly? I've been contacted by reps from both. (I'm a 1-3 year associate moving markets.) PM me if you have any inside info. Thanks!

Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
Does having a recruiter help or hurt if you aren't currently at a BigLaw firm and don't have top-of-the-line academic credentials?
I graduated top-third of my class at a good Big Ten school (think Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, etc.) and had some other good extracurricular achievements. The only job I was able to land after law school was at a small firm (15-30 attorneys) in a small market (> 100,000 people).
I've only been here for a little more than 18 months but I'm tired of the small-law work--drafting land installment contracts, wills, etc. I'm already itching to lateral to a nearby market that I have ties to (about the size of Indianapolis, Cleveland, etc.) and am wondering whether I should eventually sign up with a recruiter or instead use my ties to big firms (I know a lot of associates at these firms) instead.
Any thoughts?

I want to second Major Lindsay and Africa in SF being absolutely terrible. Lateral link sucked too. Actually, all of the Bay Area recruiters I tried sucked, so I went and got a job on my own instead.

What was you process? Did you network and mass mail the same way a 2L would? Reach out to classmates in the market?El Pollito wrote:I want to second Major Lindsay and Africa in SF being absolutely terrible. Lateral link sucked too. Anyone know anything about Michael Jude Di Genarro? Got a connection request from him and it seems like he's linking all my rising 2L classmates. Anyone have experience with him, or would a recruiter be at all helpful at this stage?

There's no reason at all to go through a recruiter if the firm posted the job on its website, right?

Yeah, most recruiters are useless. I got a job cold applying on my own. It would be better if you had a connection at the firm to submit you, but I don't see any reason to use a recruiter.Anonymous User wrote:There's no reason at all to go through a recruiter if the firm posted the job on its website, right?

Anyone have a good experience with Chicago recruiters? Specifically, has anyone used Wegman Partners or Michelle Mulholland?

Not a recruiter service but has anyone tried using CVBroadcast? Thinking I might give it a shot. I'm open to suggestions.
