Does anyone have any experience with not getting jobs at lower ranked firms because their GPAs were high enough that they would be likely to go elsewhere?

Of course you can do a lot of research on a firm and try to make them feel special - but I was just wondering if this happens often?

Bet it does. If I'm interviewing you and you don't seem that interested I may not give you a callback (even if your GPA is well above our cut) because we only have so many callbacks to offer

I have been trying to be super conservative, but only in terms of class sizes and historical offer rates. Surprisingly, a lot of TLS advice is to not underbid in terms of perceived selectivity.

Do a forum search, this topic is huge right now and you can find most of what you want to know. If you have any more specific questions, I'm sure we can address them.

What is the deal with cover letters? Should we have them ready for EIP? Are they only for mailings? Sorry that I'm to lazy to dig through all of our OCS materials.

Haha okay. I'm bored at work so I'll bite. Don't mass mail after you strike out. Are you spending the summer in a different market? Mail there before EIP. Are there firms you are interested in who aren't coming to EIP? Mail them now and try to get interviews set up. Knowing you have something in the bag will do wonders for your confidence. Plus, mass mailing after EIP gives the message that you struck out. Law being a prestige game and all, how do you think that works out?

We don't need cover letters to bid, just a resume - it doesn't matter to the firms either way because they don't get to choose. They only get your resume so they know something about who you are before they get in a room with you. Some firms will specify what other materials you need to bring to the interview (look on the EIP bid listing for each of them), but I'm guessing a cover letter is a pretty rare requirement.

ETA: 800th post! It's hilarious how much my post count increased this summer during work hours.

For what purpose? I've just saved the "printable" version of my grades as a pdf and emailed that out. For EIP, I guess it will be good to pick up a bunch of pretty hard copies, but you'll be back in NY by then, right?

Speaking of mass mailing: if I only planned on bidding on firms in NY, it would make sense to wait to mass mail until after I got my interview list and got (hopefully) more interviews through add/drop given how I won't know which ones I already have interviews with until then and all the firms I want will be at EIP anyway, right? Also thoughts on resume collection on Symplicity rather than traditional mass mailings?

that would make sense if you were only planning on mass mailing NY firms that you bid on for EIP that you didn't get, or NY firms that are coming to EIP. But if there are any firms that aren't coming to EIP I would go ahead and get those together. just IMHO though

Maybe we NYU people need more to get a job? I am emotionally prepared for a lot of rejection, but I won't lie that I like the chance to put myself in front of as many employers as possible in the hopes that something sticks...

I thought about this, but I had always heard that for NYC firm hiring, CLS and NYU are essentially equals. Either way, good luck to NYU

That does peeve me a bit as well, but I think 20 or so interviews is a good enough net for most of us.

Looking at the Interview -> Offer stats is pretty frightening, however...

Where I think the NYU system has its greatest advantage is for bidding on more than one market. I feel as though I have a decent amount of interviews to feel safe in both NYC and LA. I don't feel as though my LA bids came at the expense of safer NYC bets.

Holy eff, dude. I only got 12 and I thought I was being super smart about my bids. I didn't even get Proskauer at 2, or Cleary, Paul Weiss, or Wilson Sonsini at all (and the last two are usually undersubscribed). We must have been at totally different ends of the lottery.

Likewise, I got 14 (with no Proskauer at 4). I was pretty shocked not to get the firms at the bottom of my bids like Cravath, etc. Are these going to be easy to get tomorrow for open sign up?

also surprised, got 15 (no proskauer bid at 4)...also surprised about king and spaulding and dpw, which are underbid usually. i hope they're availabe in add drop
