Yeah congrats. I have found SEMJF to be a very good fair in the sense that it seems employers are not just going through the motions (probably because they have to report to SEMJF how many callbacks they give). I don't know if people outperform their numbers but it at least gives you a chance to get in front of employers who you at least have a chance with.Anonymous User wrote:Got my Summer Assoc. Caveat: I only interviewed with southern regional firms, who I dont think were as interested in hiring minorities than the vault firms were. but I could be totally wrong.

Southern T1, top 5%, 6 years WE. That said, I was also at PLIP, so I didn't max out my bids at SEMJF either

Re: SEMJF Call Backs
As someone who got multiple offers from SE regional firms from SEMJF, here are some of my thoughts:
Preselects:
I think that people have a misconception about SEMJF. In my opinion, it's pretty competitive to grab preselects (whereas some people think it's just an easy shortcut to a job). You're talking about top minority and female candidates from 40-50 schools, including very good schools like UVA, Duke, Vanderbilt, Texas, and Emory (probably the top 5 schools south of the Mason-Dixon). I would say, from limited experience, that almost everyone who gets 3+ preselects at SEMJF is either at one of the top schools or did very well at one of the lower-ranked schools.
Also, in my opinion, southern firms (or satellite offices located in the south) are very big on ties. If you cannot demonstrate a tie or articulate with good reason why you want to be in Atlanta/Birmingham/Charlotte/Dallas/Nashville on the spot, you're toast (the one exception is top grades at a top school). It's the same way with southern firms on campus; firms here recruit kids who want to stay for family/location/lifestyle and don't want to chase the money in New York/DC/Chicago.
Interviews:
Just like on-campus interviews, these are 20 minutes. I think students at higher ranked schools maybe believe the callback rate should be higher, but it's just not the way southern firms operate. Any given firm interviewing on Friday and Saturday is likely to see anywhere from 14 to 22 to 30 students. While top east coast firms might have a 40-50% callback rate at top schools, my guess is the callback rate at SEMJF is 20-25%, and likely lower with most firms. Firms in the south just don't have the recruitment budgets like they do in major markets and thus have to be more selective with the people they bring into the office.
Callbacks:
Who knows. Some firms call SEMJF candidates back just for the sake of filling quota. Some take them seriously. Some give them an advantage. Problem is, you never know, even when you're in the office (although you might get a better idea, it's still not fair to the firm to assume one way or another). It's unfortunate that some firms take advantage and just use SEMJF as a publicity boost, but that's life. I would like to think everyone has a shot when they get to the callback stage (especially if the firm is paying $500+ to bring you in), but that's just my opinion. It's jut like any other callback, you do the best you can with what you've got.
Offers:
They happen. I know of a lot of people who have gotten offers from SEMJF at both UVA/Duke/UT/Vandy as well as lower-ranked state schools. Just gotta show them you're the right person at the callback.
Hope that helps. Interested to hear others' opinions and experiences.

Agree on the ties thing. Tried to play ball in a screener down south but, frankly, couldn't mask my deep disdain for the entire region. They could tell---ding. I ain't mad tho, getting back north where I want to be.
