I mean I really don't understand these comparisons, especially the law-business school comparison.

Sure, the top of the heap at both do great, BUT people who enter business school to get an MBA straight out of undergrad CAN'T (absent massive family connections) get into the top business schools.

The top business schools are for people, generally, who have been successful at business related ventures for a couple of years, usually making at least decent money, and then go to business school to jump into management, lateral, etc. Proportionally, the top business schools (Kellog, Wharton, etc., do much better than the Top Law Schools.)

Law school gives EVERYBODY the opportunity to get into Yale, Stanford, Harvard, etc with NO WORK EXPERIENCE. Good business schools are generally NOT like this. A perfect GMAT and high finance undergrad GPA usually isn't enough to cut it.

Also, generally agree with the above posters that going to a shitty b-school>greater than going to a shitty law school if you have no shot at employment.

It would be illogical to recommend it if you did not secure a big law job after law school. Because if you did not secure a big law job then chances run about 99.9% that you are starting out in a law job that pays between 30K and 50K. There are plenty of similar paying jobs with similar advancements and raise opportunities that do not require losing 3 years of your life and 120K to the law school educational industrial complex.

2 questions

1. Why do so many people think getting an MBA is such a great idea? MBAs are facing the toughest job market in years (worse than law graduates) and like some have said, getting into a top MBA program is almost impossible unless you already had a top career (which usually requires having gone to a top undergrad, which means you basically had to be on track for a top MBA when you graduated high school).

2. Why are 2L's answering this question in September???????? Seriously?????? This really is not pointed out enough. Yes 2L's can give employment answers, but for them to be giving such hard nosed answers in SEPTEMBER when it comes to getting a firm job is a bit much.

This is true from a purely financial standpoint, but what about actual substantive interest in legal work? Without this, I would argue that no one has any business in law school in the first place. It probably varies from person to person how much of an investment is justified in making it possible to "get a lawyer job," but there are certainly considerations that matter as much as the pure financial calculation.
