Lol at "they basically are us in 10-15 years". While true, it ironically overlooks that in 10-15 years we'll probably all be more mellow, less judgemental, and not that prone to use phrases like "douchey".
Does a business card help you? I'd think not. Does an employer think more of student who attached one? Nah. Are you infinitely better off chasing down your contact than relying on them chasing you down? I'd imagine. That said, I don't know. No one does. Best guess, 2% may be impressed vaguely by something (like the brass it shows) and 10% may think your silly little guy for doing it. To the rest, its a "meh".
The exceptions, from what I've heard, might be schools that have directed alumni network. The Trojan network (USC) is specifically told to gear jobs toward USC grads over other more qualified students. Maybe leaving behind a big, obvious visual reminder that you are one gives you a bump. Other private schools operate simillarly, I think.

Many students at my UG had business cards. Employer reactions ranged from some being impressed to indifference. Career services viewed student business cards as a positive.

I remember midway through 1L about half of my class ordered "official" UCD Law business cards for themselves. I did not see the appeal.

Law school business cards seem like an okay idea as long as you don't go around offering them to everybody. If they are requested by someone then they're nice to have but you should still count on getting their card and contacting them. NOT the other way around.

Yeah that is pretty douchey but I tend to think anyone who hands me a business card under the age of 40 is just trying to impress me or is retarded in some way/shape/form. Why not just trade cell numbers or email?

I think what we're overlooking here is the REAL reason you don't give business cards out:
It could fall into this guy's hands:

I wanted to make an new image, but you get the idea.

TBF, people tend to print their contact info on business cards, so they are just trading cell numbers of emails, only without the step where you have to write shit down.naterj wrote: Yeah that is pretty douchey but I tend to think anyone who hands me a business card under the age of 40 is just trying to impress me or is retarded in some way/shape/form. Re: Business cards for law students - with poll
i think lawyers with business cards are "douchey." i've been practicing for a year, and I hate my business cards. I would never carry them if I didn't get asked for one every once in a while. if a law student gave me his card, I would definitely remember it, because I would make a mental note right then and there about how striver that is. To me, it would actually be kind of hilarious. I actually might call the kid to grab a drink and let him pick my brain, or even drop his name if my boss announced she wanted to add another associate, just for fun.
now keep in mind im just one dude, the lowest of the low persons on the totem pole at my small firm. so it's not like my opinion really matters. I'm just so tickled by the idea of a law student spending good money on getting business cards printed in times like these. Yes I would think the law student was a huge douche, or at best a pitifully bright-eyed and bushy-tailed neophyte. now the question becomes, do I hold that against them? listen, I'm a lawyer. I interact with douches for a living. so get your business cards with your bad self if that's what's up. just my 2 cents.

Your "don't get business cards" rant just convinced me that I should perhaps get some business cards.john titor wrote: I actually might call the kid to grab a drink and let him pick my brain, or even drop his name if my boss announced she wanted to add another associate, just for fun.

What about buisness cards left over from a previous career? Still ok to carry these in case anyone needs your info?

The crazy thing is that in the fashion world, rolodexes never went out of fashion. It was a bragging rights thing to physically show how many important contacts you had.
I like the idea of social calling cards. It's very 19th century lady, in a good way. If I had money to burn, I might approve of something like this:

However, I would not give them out at a legal networking event. I don't think I'd really give them out at all, actually. I'd just admire them and put them in a scrapbook.

Re: Business cards for law students - with poll
I'm posting without reading four pages of what I'm sure is great debate.
I voted "yes" because I think law students should have calling cards (or "business cards"). I think the real "douche vs. not douche" issue is played out in how you use them. I think using them at some firm or school sponsored networking function is probably not a good idea. You would just be handing them out to everyone. Same thing with interviews/callbacks. You don't need to whip out your calling cards.
But I can imagine select times during law school when having calling cards would have been handy and not douchey. I also think they would be useful for non-lawyer contacts.
If I received a card from a law student in an appropriate manner, I wouldn't think it's douchey. It really just depends on the situation.

Re: Business cards for law students - with poll
I'm having business cards made atm. However, I'm in a strange situation--I'm the student in charge of a corporate practicum at my school, and part of the job is drumming up potential business for the practicum. As a result, there's actually a need for me to have cards.
This is the exception, not the rule. The rule is that business cards + lawstudents = gigantic douchiness.
