I've already gotten a bunch of assignments. I kind of feel bad for the people twiddling their thumbs because that's boring as hell but I also feel intimidated whenever I read an assignment. I'll find out how competent I am tomorrow.

TIL I'm at a working summer firm. How can a problem be so hard yet so inconsequential at the same time.

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
My firm fucking blows.
I get that's it's a small class size, but they've organized like 10 events total for the summer and everyone I know is busy every day with some happy hour or event except me. I just go home after work and do nothing. Today someone mentioned that I *may* even get taken to lunch "3-4 times" this summer. Wtf is that? Everyone I know has full lunch schedules for weeks.
Is it just because it's the beginning and it's going to die down for everyone else? Because honestly it looks like my "best summer ever" is turning into "the summer of eating overpriced takeout alone and watching netflix"

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
christ thats sad. FWIW i had a SA at a smaller firm last year that was kinda like this. Maybe went to lunch like 5 times, there were maybe like 5-7 events. But honestly your objective is just to do good work, collect dat guap, and get an offer. You're still getting paid a lot to do relatively little. Reach out to friends, family, coworkers if u feel like u have nothing to do. Other SA's especially, they wanna make friends too.Anonymous User wrote:My firm fucking blows.

Same here. I'm at a law firm thats supposed to be one of the funnest, but honestly, theres only one post work event planned this week. All my friends seem to be doing a shit ton of fun stuff everyday but I've gone home alone two days in a row, especially because my friends are all busy at their SA events. I guess I could hit up the other summers in my class and ask them to some self organized HH but we haven't really even bonded yet because of the lack of events

How much have you all be drinking? Also, how's the food be so far? I just started yesterday and haven't had any alcohol yet, but the food has been pretty ridiculous (steak and sushi last two meals).

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
I don't think my firm does associate lunches (it's been super cheap thus far and they haven't told us anything about it and no one asked me to lunch yet) but I'm fucking bored at lunch and want to meet some interesting people. What's the skinny on asking associates to lunch?
I feel odd putting them in an uncomfortable position, but really I wouldn't mind grabbing a $1 slice around the corner and chilling for a bit, I just don't know how to go about asking. Ditto for drinks after work (though I feel like I can bring that up naturally after getting to know them better). My class size is small and they're all turning out to be duds, so that's a no go.

My office mate is the cutest, but that would be an extremely terrible idea.

Frankly, I'm glad that my firm doesn't do an event every day. It would get exhausting. Although, it would be nice to be at a firm where you didn't have to come in until 9 to 10 AM and got pushed out the door at 5 PM.star fox wrote:I can't believe people are complaining that they aren't being wined and dined enough. Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
Yeah, mine's pretty active in that regard and it's kinda stressing me out. I have an inbox full of people asking me to do shit that sounds fun--if there was less of it happening all at once. I opted to stay late just to get through the most urgent email requests tonight purely so I don't look like a total dick.
Also: 10 formal events in 10 weeks isn't bad. I assume you'll end up with a fair amount of informal stuff happening too, but I dunno, I wouldn't want to spend every waking hour with my coworkers, especially when they're all lawyers.

Weird to get a work email from another Summer at 8pm? Feels like they're trying too hard, but maybe I'm not working hard enough - I only stayed until 6.

Yes, definitely weird I think.Anonymous User wrote:Weird to get a work email from another Summer at 8pm? Feels like they're trying too hard, but maybe I'm not working hard enough - I only stayed until 6.
Depends on the firm I think though, mine didn't even offer to put my work email on my phone or in any place that it would be accessible when I'm not in the office. I had to ask them about it, at which point they were like "sure if you really want to I can call IT or something", after which I politely declined. Meanwhile a friend of mine is worried about missing plans on sunday for work stuff.

So far my summer has been the most exhausting experience of my life, because it is both a working summer, and we have lunch out and/or an event every day. I honestly can't wait to do work and eat a sandwich alone in my office sometimes.

My firm is a bit TTT on the events, but I'm kind of happy about that. I'm trying my best not to drink and to stay in shape this summer. I wish I was smart enough to have better grades so as to grab a prestigious firm that wines and dines every day and has Hamilton tickets or whatever, but I like my post work gym time.

Yeah, three hour 3,000 calorie lunches are all fun and games until you're in the office until 10 pm trying to finish an assignment you got at 6 pm and don't have time to go to the gym before it closes.Anonymous User wrote:So far my summer has been the most exhausting experience of my life, because it is both a working summer, and we have lunch out and/or an event every day.
