Anyway, for 2Ls panicking,

Contact firms in the area. Here is some sample wording:

"Dear [Contact Person--Look this up. Get a name, not a to whom this may concern.],

I am a second year at Harvard Law School and am interested in working at XYZ as a summer associate next summer. I bid on your firm for EIP, but did not manage to get an interview in the lottery. I will be in the area from August X to August Y and would appreciate the opportunity to meet with attorneys at XYZ if possible. Please find attached my resume and transcript.

Thank you for your consideration.

what is a reasonable amount of CBs someone should have out of the NY market to feel somewhat comfortable?

Depends on the offer rate of the firms and also whether you were under or over-performing screener-->CB in the first place.

Worst worst case scenario? Think 10-15 is safe?

Depends. I know people outside of HLS who struck out after 20+ callbacks. Are these firms where there CB-->offer ratio is less than 50%? If so, no. Are these firms where they give offers to like 80% of callbacks? Sure. If you're worried, prepare real hard for those CBs and start developing a back-up plan. 0 offers after 10-15 NYC callbacks sounds unlikely, but I wouldn't rule it out as a "worst worst case scenario."

This is ridiculous. Most firms give offers to well over half the people who have callbacks, sometimes close to 100%. Last year NYC as a market averaged a 64.8% offer rate for callbacks of HLS students. If you are an average interviewer (and someone with 15 callbacks is probably a better than average interviewer) and you go on 15 callbacks that average 64.8% offer rates, you have a 0.00001578% chance of getting no offers (the math here is: (1-0.648)^15). Even if you are a terrible interviewer who has half the average chance of getting offered (again, unlikely to be true if you got a bunch of callbacks), you still have just a 0.28% chance of getting no offers from 15 callbacks.

Just wanted to mention that those with 1-2 callbacks should be focusing on prepping for the interview(s) they have. After reading the last few pages, it seems like some people have mentally given up. I know a few rising 3ls and others from the class of 2013 that only had 1 Callback, they worked on their interview skills and landed the offer. Yes you have cause to worry but don't forget to work with what you have.

I know a few rising 3ls and others from the class of 2013 that only had 1 Callback, they worked on their interview skills and landed the offer. They did warn me and I've done mass mailings already. I'm starting to think that I should also branch out and try to apply for non-law jobs as well? Big law was my goal coming to HLS, but the outlook is not great right now. Maybe if I pull up my grades this year I'll have better luck with EIP as a 3L, but not holding my breath.

I was no-offered by my summer firm, so I'm in an even worse boat than you. 3L hiring is sparse, down, and fiercely competitive. There's a sharp uptick in no-offers this year--my section alone has the same # that the entire class had in previous years. So, if you're biglaw or bust, I'm not sure you should have enough hope to do 2L and try 3L OCI. I plan to leave law and spend most of 3L blacked out, so can't say I have any words of comfort for you.

Not hundred percent sure if they do. But I was at EIP last year and didn't see nearly the amount of 3Ls then as I did this year. Also talked to a guy at OCS and he said he noticed the same thing. Not saying everyone or even most of those 3Ls was no offered but the sheer number of 3Ls at EIP was a little weird.

Anyone have thoughts or knowledge on whether there is a significant disadvantage to doing a callback later (first week of September)? This is for NY firms (one very large/prestigious, one smaller and a bit lower in the rankings). I don't really have a choice at this point, due to my scheduling constraints and various firms' scheduling constraints, but I'm curious to know whether my odds of getting an offer will be lower (in which case I may try to schedule more CBs). Thank you!
