Does anyone else's firm have associates that have been there for like 10 years? There is a longer partner track at my firm but it still is a bit surprising.

Yes. There's a 12th-year at mine, but I think she took a few years of part-time when she had kids.monsterman wrote:Does anyone else's firm have associates that have been there for like 10 years? There is a longer partner track at my firm but it still is a bit surprising.
Serious question: Are men expected to shave every day? Is once a week preposterous?

Do lunches get less awkward throughout the summer? It sucks that some summers are dead mutes and can't carry a conversation

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
Most likely yes. I am a fairly awkward person myself, and last summer it took me about 2-3 weeks to warm up to my fellow interns / not constantly feel intimidated at my 1L summer job. I'm going to try my best to shorten that length of time for this SA, but it's difficult to overcome your natural aspie tendencies. Give the mutes a little time to adapt, they'll get there eventually.Anonymous User wrote:Do lunches get less awkward throughout the summer? with a business casual culture, hopefully it'seems ok not to shave everyday. I'll look at the partners and associates during the first few days to gauge how much they shave and follow accordingly.

I'm going full beard for several reasons, one of which is that half(ish) of the associates in my practice group have beards. If they no-offer me because of facial hair, I'll go somewhere else after my clerkship.Anonymous User wrote:with a business casual culture, hopefully it'seems ok not to shave everyday. If they no offer you for any reason, you'll be going somewhere else. Don't blame it on the beard.Anonymous User wrote:I'm going full beard for several reasons, one of which is that half(ish) of the associates in my practice group have beards. Haha, this is exactly how I feel. Having a clerkship is such a great stress reliever. I'm still going to work hard and do good work but I'm not freaking out about the possibility of a no-offer.Anonymous User wrote:I'm going full beard for several reasons, one of which is that half(ish) of the associates in my practice group have beards. FWIW, this is dead fracking wrong. You have two options: a fully-grown, well-maintained beard, or shaving every day.
We had a summer who was cold offered a couple of years back, and while I don't want to say that his perpetual 2 day old scruff was responsible, it certainly was a factor. Showed terrible judgement.
PS, there is always some associate who already was told they have six months who gives no fucks and walks around half-shorn. That does not give you a license not to shave. Similarly, there is always some partner who shaves twice a week. Generally, that partner has a $10M book of business and doesn't shave as a way of demonstrating his power. This also does not give you a license not to shave.
TL;DR: shave. Every day. Don't be an idiot.

Responding to random past things:
My firm has plenty of 10-12 year folks, for one reason or another.
Also, literally everyone in my office had leather messenger bags day one. Weird coincidence? Or right move?

FWIW I find that shaving every other day, or 2 out of 3 is better. It kills my face to shave every day

I really need some quick advice here, guys, and this topic has been incredibly helpful so far. I start tomorrow, and I'm still going back and forth on whether to shave my balls. Does the firm value the professionalism of a shorn, smooth sack, or would it rather have the billing efficiency of unkempt, gnarled knackers?

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
Definitely the former. You need to treat this like a ten week interview, and that means being professional in conduct and appearance. You'll have plenty of time to not shave once you've got the offer.Anonymous User wrote:I really need some quick advice here, guys, and this topic has been incredibly helpful so far. On the topic of shaving, even when I shave, I have shadow a few hours later...should I just wear a mask of some sort? Would Richard Nixon be considered professional?

I'm not sure if this is a flame, but assuming it's not I think that would be too unprofessional. You need to wear a mask that people won't notice, like one of the ones posted below. In the off chance someone notices just act like you don't know what they're talking about.lawman84 wrote:On the topic of shaving, even when I shave, I have shadow a few hours later...should I just wear a mask of some sort? Uh oh, I didn't shave my sack. Hopefully nobody notices under this gigantic codpiece I'm sporting for the first day.
