Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Question: I went to a firm reception during 1L Spring and talked to a partner for a while. But I unfortunately never followed up with him. I bid the firm pretty high and am very interested in it. Is it too late to reach out to him now? I am not sure if he remembers me, I highly doubt he does. Otherwise, we had a very positive interaction (I think). Thoughts?

I would reach out if you talked about something funny or unique (i.e. not just small talk). I've had a partner remember me after a year of no communication.Anonymous User wrote:Question: I went to a firm reception during 1L Spring and talked to a partner for a while. Also, I think everyone should give pre-EIP mass mailing a try. We all worked really hard last year and we all deserve a 2L SA if we want one. Why rely only on EIP?

Have people had good (or at least, not bad) results from mailing NY offices that are coming to EIP? I'm worried it'll be painfully obvious that I didn't make room on my bid list for them, and so I might as well wait for hospitality suites.Anonymous User wrote: Also, I think everyone should give pre-EIP mass mailing a try. I emailed a 85% honors firm in NY, had a callback a week later and an offer 3 days after that. My grades are non-Stone and I'm not diverse.Anonymous User wrote:Have people had good (or at least, not bad) results from mailing NY offices that are coming to EIP? They aren't thinking that hard about if you bid them or not if you clearly want to be in NY and you clearly have enough interest to try to set something up, they will at least bring you in and give you a shot. After that, your ability to hold a good conversation for 30 minutes 4 times decides. The people who wait for EIP will seem comparatively lukewarm on them.

As a 3L who did mass mail, mass mailing yields very few responses and fewer interviews. Yes, mass mail, but don't spend too much time on the firms that are out of your reach until you hit the firms within your reach.Anonymous User wrote:I emailed a 85% honors firm in NY, had a callback a week later and an offer 3 days after that. Also firms WILL NOT "at least bring you in and give you a shot" if you don't meet the cutoffs.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
So how do we explain the V20 person's result? I've been hesitant to mail reach firms because I assumed they would tell me to wait till EIP, but s/he was able to finagle something pretty good. Is there a way to play up certain things that'll make a reach more likely to bring you in pre-EIP?

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
FYI, I got a mass mail response from a V5, asking to come in for a screener interview. Another mail to a V5 came back with a callback offer (but I had closer ties/previous interactions with that firm so it wasn't exactly cold).

When you get an interview from a pre-EIP firm contact, is it generally assumed that those are screeners or callbacks? It hasn't been scheduled yet so I can't tell how long it's going to be.

What are your grades, WE, etc? Absent any other data, that someone got a V5 MM callback isn't informative.Anonymous User wrote:FYI, I got a mass mail response from a V5, asking to come in for a screener interview. Apologies, I should have included it. Kent + LR + WE so I'm probably more likely to get attention from these firms, but I know there are lots of other well suited students in this thread who could also see similiar results.Anonymous User wrote:What are your grades, WE, etc? Just ask them when you schedule how long it will be. 20-30 minutes = screener, several hours = callback. Different firms do both.Anonymous User wrote:When you get an interview from a pre-EIP firm contact, is it generally assumed that those are screeners or callbacks? Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Depends on the length. If they say it's gonna be 1-2 interviews and you're out, it is a screener. If it's more than 2 and there is a lunch, it is a callback. They'll likely send you an schedule for your office visit beforehand and you can make some assumptions from that.Anonymous User wrote:When you get an interview from a pre-EIP firm contact, is it generally assumed that those are screeners or callbacks? Have people been mailing firms they bid for EIP?

I mailed a couple. I'm bidding a lot on my hometown and am going home for a week before EIP, so I figured why not.Anonymous User wrote:Have people been mailing firms they bid for EIP?

So a fun tidbit, apparently Petal Modeste is still on vacation. She apparently takes a month long vacation to France every year. I don't understand how the Dean of Career Services can leave for a month at the same time that resumes and bid lists are due to her own office.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Figured I should post my own experience.
Mid-3.6s, LR, mass-mailed about 30-35 firms. Majority of emails were to firms/firm offices I didn't bid on, which came out to 75%+ outside New York. I did all my mass-mailing before bid lists were due. I don't know how much timing matters with this, but it probably helps to have done it earlier, especially with EIP in ~3 more weeks (at least if the firm's coming to that, too).
New York: two CBs (V15), three screeners.
DC: one CB scheduled after EIP, one screener.
Silicon Valley: three CBs, plus one that will give me a screener whenever I happen to be in the area.
Also, Quinn offer.
It went very well and I would suggest doing this for anyone who happens to read this before applying next year. That said, I want to note that almost all of these weren't blind emails to the firm with a resume + transcript. I tried to make long-term contacts throughout the year/summer, which proved invaluable in terms of making sure my resume got seen... I don't know if that's possible to build as late as mid-July. I had at least 15 attorneys offering advice or being interested in my career by the end of June, before hearing about LR.
The two blind emails that did convert to a CB/screener were for secondary markets rather than New York.
One quick edit - if you talk to people, even if you don't get a CB/screener, one common response I've gotten is that if I don't get a screener through bidding to email them and they'll help me get an interview. Basically what you'd be attempting to do in the hospitality suites, but with less left to chance.

...I've been pretty optimistic about my EIP prospects so far but now I'm certainly underwhelmed about what I've been doing (aka nothing). I felt safe sitting on my Stone and didn't think I needed to mass mail etc. Either way, congratulations on being in a great position and being proactive about the process.Anonymous User wrote:Figured I should post my own experience.

You'll still do fine, this definitely isn't something anyone needs to do. I initially wanted to try the proactive approach mostly because I couldn't make up my mind what city I wanted to go to, and I didn't want to be stretched too thin for each city on my bid list (like bidding only 10 New York firms, instead of being able to bid 15-20). I was looking for anything that might save me from having to bid on a firm.
My understanding's that 99% of students take an offer from EIP, and most of the firms I really like I still have to go through EIP for. Stone's a damn good place to be.

Yea that's true. Gotta keep my perspective. Well done on your part though -- being proactive about what you want is always good.Anonymous User wrote:I'm the dude who made the original post.Anonymous User wrote:...I've been pretty optimistic about my EIP prospects so far but now I'm certainly underwhelmed about what I've been doing (aka nothing). Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Are they as advertised? Going by Chambers, each seems to be an incredibly strong DC practice, second only to a place like W&C. The pay-walled evaluations on Vault make the firms look very appealing more broadly, but I wanted to see if anyone had heard anything one way or another about them.Anonymous User wrote:What about them?Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone have some insight into Skadden or Gibson DC?
