Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
I'd definitely wait until things are finalized before freaking out and declaring that 0Ls shouldn't attend UVA. Remember that most students in the class of 2012 who sought big law were successful, and that things will probably only improve from here on out (barring a double dip and/or a default). The reports here are certainly concerning, and I'd recommend prospective students closely follow this thread to see how it all unfolds, but it's far too early to give up.

KTHNX.
If you go to UVa, work really hard to be top of your class. If you're lower than that, life won't be a magic carpet ride. Given the economy, not too surprising.

Is this the death-knell for the "BID NYC" mantra?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
This can't be right. If it is, I have no idea what the reason is.
It can't be because of the default/debt concerns. These interview rooms were booked months ago and even if they weren't hiring a single person, they would still be interviewing. They pay too much.
Has to be either the system or just a MASSIVE feast/famine range which is possible.

I've had a Gibson Dunn DC preselect since first thing this morning, so this goes to show that at least some results are still forthcoming.Anonymous User wrote:I was the anonymous poster from above. Seems like both is happening at least to some extent. But like others have said, the famine will decrease once the feasters make their selections.Anonymous User wrote:This can't be right. If it is, I have no idea what the reason is.

Honestly, I'm getting more and more scared about this exact thing after talking with classmates at my top 10. Seems like everybody who wants an easier shot at the monies and prestiges (read: pretty much everybody) is flocking to NYC. Terrified about bid results.Anonymous User wrote:Is this the death-knell for the "BID NYC" mantra?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
What? The worst one I saw was top 1/4 with 3 preselects and 8 alternates, and I saw no mention of WE. From how quickly the top of of the class is shedding their NYC, there's reason to believe that s/he'll be snagging a decent chunk of those.desertlaw wrote:Ya, but there are people in top 1/4 with WE that got less than 3 pre-selects in NYC.Anonymous User wrote:Seems WE was a very big factor this year.

so when the people shed their NYC bids, what happens exactly? Does simplicity update again?

Anecdotally, I've heard anywhere from 0 to 7 for friends that have 3.0-3.2

Or it could be, oh I don't know, related to one of those five emails career services has sent in the past 12 hours telling us not to freak out anonymously on the internet?

3.20-3.25 GPA
2 years WE (nothing spectacular but not trivial either)
bid 90% NYC firms and all the ones with numbers in my range
no NYC ties
0 preselect, 0 alternates
holy shit

Are we ready to admit that 1L summer is important and you need ties to NYC?

Could someone who is freaking out (and has read the e-mails from career services re: continued entry of pre-selects/alternates) please explain to me why they are freaking out?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
Because lottery interviews are, for the most part, a complete waste of time. If you get a preselect then you have a realistic chance at getting hired. You are no longer in a situation where you would be rejected off of grades/resume alone.Anonymous User wrote:seriously the situation is pretty f***ed, I feel like fordham kids are getting more interviews than us
edit: i used to think people made too big a deal about the preselect system but knowing that at any other T14 I would be guaranteed a certain amount of interviews, why the hell would you go to UVA?

In any case, I don't think the issue is a pre-conceived notion that there would be a magic carpet ride to the top. Everyone knows that it's hard out there. It's that people who seemingly got decent grades and appear to have bid appropriately on NYC are doing way below expectations.
