I know y'all are enjoying your summers already but I have an insurance law exam tomorrow and... well, let's just say I haven't studied as much as I should. Anyone happen to have a similar outline? This is like first time it's been offered here in 3 years, so I haven't been able to find one. The book is Baker and Logue. I would be eternally grateful to you.

Yeah, I think almost everyone knows that this is not the way it actually will be when we are associates. All the more reason to enjoy this now and never look back at this thread once we actually start

Week 1 stats (Non-NYC major market ftw):

5 nights drunk (1 firm reception that transitioned into happy hour, 3 impromptu happy hours with junior associates that were expensed to the firm [one of which ended in a night out until 12:30...and I died the next day] - many of these events included tequila shots...)
3 dinners
5 lunches out with $60/person budget...all summers ordering drinks at lunch by day 3
4 breakfasts (3 were full breakfasts, 1 was pastries/smoothie bar)
1 planned SA events (reception)
0 pro sports event or similar (but 2 next week)

Dollars spent on meals/drinks: $0 - was told I won't buy lunch a single day and I'm cool with it

Hours billed on a weekend/before 10am/after 5:30 pm: LOL GTFO

Yea, that's about how it is where I am at, as I didn't go to a number of things. Essentially if you can find an associate that wants to drink for free with you, the firm will pay up to $65 per person for you to do so. One I went to involved drinking games at a bar. The firm doesn't seem to really care at all.


Also, it is staggering how many people who did write on managed to write about the wrong issue(s) or not even meet the page limit. Small sample size so far, but more have fucked it up than didn't.

Dollars spent on meals/drinks: like, by myself? $8 lunc + $6 snacks from snack bar. How much did attorneys spend on my lunches total? ~$100-150

Hours billed on a weekend/before 10am/after 5:30 pm: 0. Takes a while to get into the groove but billed ~35 this week.

2. Depends on the family emergency. If significant health event then I think the firm would understand: lawyers are people as well as professionals.

With those two things in mind, I'd guess that you'll be fine. Use your judgment - if it's a big enough deal that any employer would understand, then law firms would probably too. Also try not to let it take too much time - even if the recruiting people are understanding, you're still cutting into time you need to make an impression, meet people, etc. But if you're at a traditionally "100% offer" firm then I'm guessing chance are good you'll be all right.

Good luck/condolences with whatever emergency you've got going on dude.

The irony isn't lost on me. My perspective on this is to do my best work, get an offer, then start looking to get out. I've got my eyes on a few government honors programs especially.

I like the work, and I like the people though.

Also, I've billed about 36/45 each week over the past two weeks. Thats sort of a normal ratio, right?

And if the firm actually gave us the option of starting in june (making it an 8 week program) would what you say be different?

With either of those pieces of info I'd upgrade it to 'you'll almost definitely be fine'

I don't have my billing in front of me but they told us to bill full days for training and whatnot to the firm. So not real client related stuff.

I need to start billing lunches. They told us to, I just haven't been bc it seems pointless, but I assume somebody will look at my hours at some point.

Yeah, we're supposed to account for our entire day as well including lunches and anything else we do. I just feel weird putting down "socializing with associates on my floor" so I am a little short of the 7 hours per day they want us to list out everyday. Hopefully they don't care too much

Yeah absolutely bill to the firm for lunches. There should be a code for it
