That's kind of a weird comment, that you find them all "quirky" or worse. Is this a group of 3L friends you find off-putting?Anonymous User wrote:I personally know a couple of the 3Ls who'll be joining K&E in Houston next year. They're pretty... quirky is the polite word. You get my drift, but basically they're guys I'd rather not work with. Definitely echo the above, accept V&E, and congrats!

Re: 2014 Texas OCI (UT and other schools bidding on TX)
Does it look bad if I spend the full 10 weeks at V&E instead of splitting? I have one second-half offer with a firm that I wouldn't take over V&E, and I would prefer to be able to do an additional rotation or two through corporate this summer instead of moving to a new firm and going through orientation/getting familiar with a new environment again.
The only thing I'm concerned about is putting all my eggs in one basket, since I could potentially have two chances at an offer. And I don't want them to think I'm somehow a less desirable candidate because I couldn't get anything for the second half of summer. But I also wonder if staying for the full program might increase my chances at V&E?

Any reason to be considered that V&E only offered 33/40 last year in its Houston office?

Does anyone know what the compensation is like at either Porter Hedges or King and Spalding after year one. Both for Houston offices. I imagine both are somewhat compressed NY Lockstep, but I wasn't sure.

I've read either earlier on this thread or in the same one from the 2013 OCI process that Porter Hedges was indeed a compressed NY lockstep. Also, if you don't mind me asking, when did you receive your PH offer?Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone know what the compensation is like at either Porter Hedges or King and Spalding after year one. Does anyone know which firms follow NY lockstep and which use a more compressed salary scale? NALP shows almost all paying 160k to start, but it's difficult to find salaries beyond that.

I got the offer on September 11 and then they emailed me the offer letter on the 12th. I hope that helps!Anonymous User wrote:I've read either earlier on this thread or in the same one from the 2013 OCI process that Porter Hedges was indeed a compressed NY lockstep. Does anybody know V&E's offer rate this past summer (2014 not 2013)?

I think that was just poorly worded. I would bet he meant that he received his post-CB ding from HB Houston in the mail today.mw115 wrote:Seriously? poor form!Anonymous User wrote:Ding by HB Houston by mail after CB today.
On another note, has anyone heard movement from Gardere (Houston), Baker Hostetler (Houston), or Thompson Coe (Dallas). Also, it appears that some PH offers have gone out. Has anyone received a rejection yet?

No movement for Thompson Coe (Dallas) for me. CB was a little over a week ago.

Would Vinson & Elkins allow me to do a second-half split? If yes, would it have to be six weeks, or is there even a chance that five would be possible?

Would also love to know this information for Baker Botts as well, and if this is allowed, does it reflect negatively on your candidacy for a full-time offer?Anonymous User wrote:Would Vinson & Elkins allow me to do a second-half split? Re: 2014 Texas OCI (UT and other schools bidding on TX)
From what I've heard, it's extremely rare to allow the change in first-half to second-half (i.e., you really have to be offering something incredible and/or have a very legitimate reason for not being able to attend first-half). Anyone else have thoughts on this?Anonymous User wrote:Would also like to know this for either V&E or BB.Anonymous User wrote:Would also love to know this information for Baker Botts as well, and if this is allowed, does it reflect negatively on your candidacy for a full-time offer?Anonymous User wrote:Would Vinson & Elkins allow me to do a second-half split? I'm one of the curious posters above. In my instance, the other firm (in another market) has staunchly refused a second-half split, despite my best efforts. I have no choice but to hope that V&E will, because I feel like I can't make a fully informed and confident decision on where I truly want to go until I've done a little work at both. As for offering something incredible? Nope. I bring nothing special to the firm, just good grades/credentials at a T14, no business nor connections nor anything like that.

Please report back on your negotiations if you attempt to work out a second-half split. I was planning on accepting V&E anyway, but this could be a gamechanger for me since I also have a firm in another market that insists on spending the first 6-8 weeks there.Anonymous User wrote:I'm one of the curious posters above. Thanks, that was me. Confirmed. First round of offers have gone out which will likely be enough to fill the summer class.Anonymous User wrote:For the person who keeps asking about Gardere Houston, I received an offer after CB on September 5th.
Congratulations, seems like a great place with some very likeable people in the office.
