Is it appropriate to give a modest gift along side a "thank you" note for a prof who wrote multiple recommendations?

I don't think it would be inappropriate, just unnecessary. Your profs are making $$$, a thank you note should suffice.

I'm not sure what you mean by "open" but there are definitely attorneys working today. I'd hazard that it's not a holiday at most firms which would mean that recruiting departments should be in.

I will say that being this neurotic about it isn't going to do you any good. Whether they are open or not, they will contact you when they contact you.

Had a CB couple weeks ago. Haven't heard back, including no timeline of when I might hear.

Anyone getting impatient? I have a couple good judge offers in hand, but I keep thinking about the stuff on the table. I had a callback at a NLJ 250 firm a week ago, and four major OCI interviews in the last 7-8 days, and I'm constantly checking my phone to see if I have any missed calls or emails. I think all of the interviews went well (the callback was the very first place I interviewed OCI), but there are so few positions and a couple I really want.

I get the feeling that law school attracts obsessive people. Or maybe its just me.

yeah, I'm anxious too

at least your interview was recent so you dont have to wait as long, I interviewed in early Jan. and they explicitly told me they wouldn't be done interviewing until end of feb. =/

Yeah, they all told me somewhere in the two week waiting range. I talked to my schools placement person, and he said that if a firm really wants someone they will either offer them early at OCI or ahead of schedule. But I haven't heard from anyone in my class that they have been contacted or gotten a callback, so I've got my fingers crossed that I'm still in the mix and hopefully will get some good news this week.

Should I wear a skirt suit for an informational interview with an alum?

I'm just as anxious too. Had a few interviews and have several more important ones coming up. I'm worried about the timing of any potential decisions.

Anyone feel like this is affecting their focus on class/study this semester?

I'm trying to keep it from affecting me, but it probably is. In terms of timing, there seems to be at least two or three weeks between decisions for firms where I interviewed. At this point at least I'm no longer applying unless a good firm comes up because I can cover the summer with two judges.

Is it cool to email a prof and straight up ask them for a research gig? Like, "Professor, I really like your work in x, and I'm interested in x, and was wondering if you needed anybody to help you with x?"

How close are you with the prof? I'd feel comfortable doing this with a couple of profs that I have a really good relationship with.

Just ask over office hours. Far less awkward.

I'd email but leave them an out: "I really admire your work, I have xyz qualities, if you are considering hiring an intern I'd like to be considered."

Its been almost two months since I have heard from a few firms I applied to (and that was just acknowledgement of my app) is it approproiate to email them and ask for an update on where they are in the process and reconfirm my interest in the firm or just keep waiting?

What do you do if an interviewer asks an inappropriate question? I.e. Do you have plans to have children, etc. How do you handle that? (Happened to a friend whose interviewer was grilling him about his ties!)

What I have seen suggested:

- answer the question, if you don't mind/don't think it will hurt you (or don't care)
- answer the concern behind the question - e.g. re: planning to have kids, if you think they're concerned about you putting in the time, say something like, "I'm very committed to establishing my career and really making a contribution to [the firm/whatever]." (not the greatest wording on my part, sorry.)
- ask why they want to know, e.g., "How does that relate to the position here?" (this may not work really well for all inappropriate questions and may be tricky to carry off tactfully)

If you google "how to answer inappropriate interview questions" you'll get lots and lots of info on this.

The lawyer in liars poker getting interviewed said none of your business and that's apparently cool.
