Ask what's appropriate. I would say at least biz casual.ilovesf wrote:I'm going to ask this here because it's pointless to make a new thread, but if you get invited to dinner by a firm (separate from a CB), you shouldn't wear a suit, right? Sorry I'm totally neurotic.

Solid use of anon. Really protecting that personal info there.
And I'm pretty formal. I always stick with Mr. / Ms. unless told otherwise.

If one of the interviewers e-mails you and signs it with only their first name, do you still stick with Mr./Ms.? I was told someone always sticks your e-mails in a file, so you should stick with Mr./Ms. throughout the whole recruiting process, but it seems weird if they sign it only with their first name.kalvano wrote:Anonymous User wrote:When writing thank you's - should you address them by first name, or by Mr./Ms.?

I stick with Mr. / Ms. I'm just not comfortable using a first name until told to do so.

this won't make or break you. don't worry about it. i've been using recruiters' first names when they email me back and sign the email using their first name. probably not a big deal in and of itself.ilovesf wrote:Cso told me to use first name and I did. Really doubt that this matters. The interviewers are people too - as long as it wasn't a 55 + yr old partner Id bet your fine. You really shouldn't be stressing so hard. Yah its important times - but after the interview, its 99% out of your hands. Go enjoy your summer.chimp wrote:this won't make or break you. don't worry about it. i've been using recruiters' first names when they email me back and sign the email using their first name. probably not a big deal in and of itself.ilovesf wrote:Cso told me to use first name and I did. I highly doubt it matters that much. I wouldn't sweat it. I'm probably overly formal.ilovesf wrote:Cso told me to use first name and I did. Fuck.kalvano wrote:I stick with Mr. / Ms. I'm just not comfortable using a first name until told to do so.

Once someone has signed something with their first name only, use that.ilovesf wrote:If one of the interviewers e-mails you and signs it with only their first name, do you still stick with Mr./Ms.? Yeah, I got one of these a few weeks back for the DC office. I didn't meet their stated grade cutoff for OCI screeners, so I have to imagine they distribute these liberally.Anonymous User wrote:can you elaborate? how did they get your info? what office?Anonymous User wrote:Got request from K&L Gates LLP to apply

Got an invite for screener outside of OCI from Kirkland & Ellis. Waited 2 days to respond to figure out when I'd be available due to other pending interviews. K&E said their schedule was full...didn't get screener...

when a recruiting coordinator called me yesterday in response to my mass mail, they said they wanted to bring me in "to meet with a couple hiring committee members." i figured they meant for a screener and i won't be in the city anytime soon, so asked if a phone interview would work. the recruiting person then said "ummm no, we do our callbacks in person." whoops. wouldn't have asked if i knew we were going to skip the screener...super awkward start to this process with that firm.

Re: Summer 2013 Non-OCI Job Hunt (Mass Mail, Job Fairs, etc)
Had a phone screener today for which I was horribly unprepared. I was in another city at the time without my comp and missed a call from the firm. I wanted to hurry up and call back the same day due to the recent horror story on here, and figured it was probably just to schedule some kind of interview - but I got quizzed on the spot. Had no idea what the practice areas or offices even were.
Oh well, still felt like I got along with the recruiter, so hopefully I still hear back
Aside: So far I'm at 3 non-OCI bites, 15 OCI screeners, and 1 solid lead from networking. If any 0L/1Ls are reading this, I'd definitely advise you to listen to your career advisors when they tell you to have a multi-front approach to the job search (mailing, OCI, and networking). I can't imagine relying on only one or even two of those things, but I'm starting to feel like things might actually end up ok at this rate.
