Awkward question: How does drug use (before and during the beginning of law school) affect job prospects for state AG, DA, and PD? Is this a common question in interviews? Or is it simply done through drug tests?

You don't need a PD's office per se to satisfy the 6A. It's the best way to do it (and I'm personally a big fan of funding PD's offices very well), but not the only way.

Any guesses on 1) the chances of a lie being found out (assuming no conviction) and 2) the repercussions for lying?Ded Precedent wrote: Do you have convictions or were you planning on saying "yes" when they asked if you have ever used drugs?

just be honest to an extent. I have a conviction and at least for internships, no one has seemed to care.Anonymous User wrote:Past use doesn't mean current or future use.seatown12 wrote:lol neither but do you really wanna be the ultimate hypocrite douche, a drug-using DA?Anonymous User wrote:Awkward question: How does drug use (before and during the beginning of law school) affect job prospects for state AG, DA, and PD? Be honest. Also, what kind of drugs? If it's just weed, likely they won't care that much.

Also: I think it's hypocritical to put someone in jail or prison for conduct identical or similar to what the DA has done in the past or is doing now.

Well, Gideon v. Wainwright says you need to guarantee counsel b/c of the 6th Amendment. I guess how you provide that counsel can vary, but short of a giant-ass private donation, one way or another the funding for the attorneys, whether they are private attorneys or a public office, is coming from the government. I wouldn't say Bilbo was off by saying PD offices are required by the Constitution. Effectively they are.

Lots of jurisdictions have court appointed attorneys and no public defender offices. The Gideon requirement is certainly met in those instances, despite the fact that indigents are not represented by a PD office.

The PD's office is the only local government office required by the US Constitution. They won't go away. They're already being stretched in terms of caseloads. As soon as there's more money they'll be doing a ton of hiring. I don't know what else to tell you.
ROTFL! It's also required by the "Constitution" to get Congressional approval for war, but of course we know that doesn't happen.
PD and prosecutor jobs are easy and painless to cut, since both are little more than make-work paper churning. In NJ they cut 25% of these clowns and just tell poor people to hit the library and do it themselves:

To add to that, the Supreme Court was serious when they ruled on this matter. If a court refuses to appoint counsel for someone charged with a felony who can't afford an attorney, the case gets dismissed or remanded. Let a state like Alabama try to fire all its PD's and watch as they fail to put a single felony case in prison until they hire them back.

This whole thread is perhaps the most ROTFL item I've ever seen on the internet! Do you really think anyone in gov't cares anything about the "average" shitlaw criminal case? They'll just stop prosecuting more and more cases, like Tpeka, KS is doing with wifebeating:To add to that, the Supreme Court was serious when they ruled on this matter. Even Camden, NJ, a longtime member of the "Top 3" most dangerous cities in America (and often ringing in at #1), canned 18 ADA's last year:
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/loc ... 20454.html
Sacremento CA shitcanned 31 ADA's last year, and likewise say they'll just stop prosecuting bullshit crimes:

Personally I approve and endorse this development, and believe it's a great way to slash budgets. Most of the "criminals" are low level drug possessors and pushers. The USA already has the highest % of it's population in prison of any Western country, so culling the herd of useless paper pushers who "lock 'em up" is a great idea.
Now I'm off to the Star Trek forum to read the thread about "First Manned Mission to Mars" gunners, which is much more realistic a career expectation than the nonsense in this thread. The closest most of you are ever getting to a DA/PD job is watching "Law & Order" reruns on your DVR.

Agreed in full. Not inconsistent with virtually anything anyone else in this thread has said.sadsituationJD wrote:Personally I approve and endorse this development, and believe it's a great way to slash budgets. I heard big law firms laid off people too. So did a whole lot of government agencies. Damn it, that means I cannot find a legal job anywhere. I know I should have listened to MTal.sadsituationJD wrote: This whole thread is perhaps the most ROTFL item I've ever seen on the internet! sigh, this douche again
Sacramento:
Camden, New Jersey
Sacramento:
http://www.news10.net/news/watchdogs/15 ... settlement"As you know on August 11, we informed our staff there would be no layoffs," Scully said. "We settled a major lawsuit against Chevron and this lawsuit was for violations of anti-pollution laws."
....
It's enough money for her office to reinstate about 60 jobs and enable prosecutors to continue going after suspects in major narcotics, political corruption and misdemeanor cases.
Camden, New Jersey
http://articles.philly.com/2011-05-04/n ... lough-daysThe number of workers to be laid off at the Camden County Prosecutor's Office is expected to come down to three, dramatically fewer than the 66 notified in February that they could lose their jobs, authorities have confirmed.
As negotiations continue between the county and unions, optimism has emerged that authorities will preserve nearly all of what Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk has said is an already lean staff that handles a high volume of criminal cases.
The prosecutor said Tuesday that he had identified three people who do not serve core functions in the office - a community liaison, a crime-scene agent, and the police academy coordinator - who could be let go.

Re: How to be a Prosecution/PD Gunner?
Yeah, let's try and join an industry where the tiny % of people who do have jobs are hanging on to them by the skin of their teeth and layoffs will be bearing down HARD as property tax revenues and other gov't funding dry up and the economy further deteriorates. Let's also borrow gobs of money and piss away 3 prime years of life to do so.
NEWSFLASH: Jack McCoy is an actor, kids. His "real name" is Sam Waterston, and the "courtroom" is just a TV-show set (kind of like the Starship Enterprise LOL) Real life DA's sit in grungy basement broom closets and bang out plea deals for pot possessors all day long like DMV clerks (only lower paid rotlf) for 45 K a year and drive salt-rotted Yugos to work, praying every night they don't get laid off and tossed on the unemployment line with the rest of the TTT losers.
