same way you determine who a good employee is at any job. even jobs that require no skill have good and bad employees based on other attributes like dependability, work ethic, attention to detail, etc.rpupkin wrote:Serious question: How do you distinguish a good junior associate from a not good junior associate?bern victim wrote:who cares about law students. why would any good junior or midlevel associate stay at seyfarttt if they don't match

That's how a junior associate's current law firm can tell whether the associate is good or bad. But how does a firm to which the junior associate is looking to lateral (which is what you're talking about) figure that out?bern victim wrote:same way you determine who a good employee is at any job. even jobs that require no skill have good and bad employees based on other attributes like dependability, work ethic, attention to detail, etc.rpupkin wrote:Serious question: How do you distinguish a good junior associate from a not good junior associate?bern victim wrote:who cares about law students. why would any good junior or midlevel associate stay at seyfarttt if they don't match

If I had to guess K&S was waiting on someone else to set what market is in the south before moving. Once Katten announced their Charlotte office at 155, K&S shortly followed for Charlotte and Atlanta. Before Katten, all the big firms that moved in Charlotte went to 180, and I doubt K&S wanted to pay that.Anonymous User wrote:"I heard ... Atlanta" anon here. yea for sure. but it's so easy for firms to disappear laterals if they turn out to be shit. easier to just hang on at your original firm who is more investedEl Pollito wrote:it's not really hard to fake experience in an interviewbern victim wrote:my guess is they use the type and quantity of work you've been given as a proxy

Yeah, except they don't get to talk to the senior associates and partners at your old firm; they won't really know what "quantity" of work you've been given.bern victim wrote:my guess is they use the type and quantity of work you've been given as a proxy
By the way, if you're a junior associate trying to lateral, the two most important things are your law school and grades, in that order.

Eh, maybe for first years or early 2nd. I have interviewed a bunch of lateral juniors and I don't give a FUCK where you went to school or whether you CALI'd your property class, so long as you know what you're talking about/appear competent are at least moderately sociable.
Edit: if you got terrible grades that's an exception, obviously.

no matter what atlanta moves to, they'll always have that TTT secondary market lock step. fourth years in atlanta make $152k.
even the IP bump at the GP firms have the same sps lock step unless you're actually at fish/finnegan, the true reasons for that bump to begin with.
so even when atlanta moves to $160k (in 2019/2020), you're likely still not even breaking $200k as an 8th year.
don't get me wrong, that's still a lot of money for a secondary like atlanta, but between the likely delayed raise and the compressed scale, it's part of the reason I decided against atlanta in anticipation of NY2$180k
sorry if this was discussed already. this thread is jumping 30+ pages a day...

Offices in more expensive cities went from $145 to $160k. Chicago, LA, DC, Dallas. Not sure about SF/Boston/Houston (Boston and Houston are brand new anyway).Anonymous User wrote:RareExports wrote:They weren't paying market before, anywhere.Anonymous User wrote:http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... &start=375
Polsinelli announced raises, allegedly. Amounts not known.
Also heard they raised. Not sure to what though
Phoenix, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Denver went from $125k to $135k. Not sure where the other offices fit in, but those aren't large ones to begin with and not sure if they had many young associates.

Agreed. Turned down one of K&S/A&B for TX. You have to love Atlanta a whole lot to be willing to give up the massive pay differential.Anonymous User wrote:no matter what atlanta moves to, they'll always have that TTT secondary market lock step. fourth years in atlanta make $152k.

K&S Houston confirmed to 180, even for summers.

To the previous poster that said Brogan might tell the summer associates about raises--well, we could submit questions to him and there were a bunch of people asking about moving to 180.
In Brogan's speech he told us that "this is the best time in the history of the world to be a lawyer.' I take that to mean it is the best time in the history of the world to be a partner, because F you, no raises.

Did he definitively say whether or not JD will be matching? Or give any hints as to whether it was likely to happen?Anonymous User wrote:To the previous poster that said Brogan might tell the summer associates about raises--well, we could submit questions to him and there were a bunch of people asking about moving to 180.

He didn't say anything. He said he reads the 'trade publications' and knows what goes on, but didn't hint at raises. I can't say I'm surprised--his views of how law firms should operate are polar opposite to conventional views.trendem wrote:Did he definitively say whether or not JD will be matching? I am not the anon who said Brogan would tell summers. But an open forum like that would be the last place brogan would say anything about pay. I stand by my original comment that the raises will come via regularly scheduled comp memos at the end of June. You heard it here first.
