I think most people got offers this year, but the quality or raw quantity of those offers differed a bit from years prior. Many people with excellent grades, etc. who expected really elite options have had to settle for still good - but less historically competitive - options. This varied quite a bit by market:Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 10:55 am
Also, what percentage of your 2L classmates and friends (not on TLS) would you say have received offers at this point?
Thanks for keeping us all updated, and best of luck with callbacks and remaining interviews.
In general, NYC seemed fairly normal this year. Maybe a few firms did a lot of Pre EIP or whatever, but the market as a whole seemed to return predictable and fair results for almost all in NYC. Every year some people think they're going to get Wachtell / Cravath / wherever and don't and are disappointed. But the big NYC players seemed to offer plenty of people and folks who bid well and comprehensively did more than fine.
DC and CA are always a bloodbath but it appears definitely worse this year. The thing to keep in mind about DC, in particular, is that most of the magna crowd bids DC; yet there are not even enough good DC offers to fill just the magna folks, not to mention that not all hiring is grades-based and many lower grades people with experience / personable / diversity/practice area interest will still get DC offers. So it's entirely guaranteed that quite a few people with excellent grades will strike out in DC (these people also tend to only bid the most selective DC firms, exacerbating the problem). Fast-forward to this year: there were even fewer offers available and this HLS class bid even more DC than typical I think. That being said, I think people who realistically bid DC and fit in the latter category (ties/experience/etc over grades) did fine this year since they bid smarter/less solely prestige driven and this year's process deemphasized grades (particularly at screener stage since transcripts not sent out until the end of the day). That's why a lot of high grades folks (and people who fit into neither category) got stuck in a bad situation in DC this year...even more than usual. I think a similar dynamic took place with the competitive CA firms (i.e. Munger, which is always competitive, slightly shrunk their summer class, and also factor in that they finished YLS/SLS hiring which is high % in their class).
No question that virtual probably created more variance in interview performance/perception and added more unpredictably for people who did really comparatively well on zoom or comparatively horribly on zoom. Another minor factor this year was yield. With EIP taking later and in a different enviornment, I think firms put a premium on people who they thought would accept the offer. This wasn't a huge effect - top places are always drawing candidates with many offers - but I think hurt people with their "safeties" if they didn't articulate any clear interest in those firms.

These are great insights on this year's EIP. It seems that 2Ls who aren't terrible interviewers and don't pursue hyper-competitive markets and/or unwise bidding strategies generally don't strike out at EIP. I will keep this info in mind when doing EIP for my 2L summer.

This is always the case. If you have time, browse through previous years' threads and you will see the same. And for other 1Ls - don't put all your eggs in the DC/CA basket, even if you think you have the grades.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 8:06 pmSame HLS 1L anon from earlier.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 3:00 pmI think most people got offers this year, but the quality or raw quantity of those offers differed a bit from years prior. If anything, this year proved why it's good to be at HLS - even during rough years, top employers will look to hire from the school.

I had a firm give me an offer, but I'm pretty sure that I was put on hold before they did. Is it childish that I'm turned off by that? The firm used to be my top choice, but now I feel like I'd much rather go with another firm.

I don't think so, but if the work is interesting and you like the people, you should go with it. They could have rejected you, and they still want you.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 10:27 amI had a firm give me an offer, but I'm pretty sure that I was put on hold before they did. It’s natural to want to be wanted, but if they ultimately gave you an offer, they want you. And once you’re in, it won’t matter if you were their first offer or their last. If there were good reasons why they were your first choice, don’t let this stand in the way.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 7:01 pmI don't think so, but if the work is interesting and you like the people, you should go with it. I am the original anon who had callback with Proskauer NY. Sorry that I missed your update. I received a similar email about a week ago and it has been radio silence since.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:55 pmNope, full disclosure I go to a different school, but was given the same info about 1-2 weeks being their expected turnaround time and haven’t gotten any news yet. Maybe they are waiting for all callbacks to finish up?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 2:30 pm
