Some people love to talk about the power of market forces when it's the market for capital, but totally invert their logic when it's the market for labor.First Offense wrote:What the fuck is a market driven force other than one firm trying to get a competitive advantage and then all of the other firms realizing they have to match or suffer competitive consequences?
Isn't that exactly a market driven force?

Yeah, if "you keep poaching all our mid-levels" isn't a market force, I don't know what is.djackso1 wrote:Some people love to talk about the power of market forces when it's the market for capital, but totally invert their logic when it's the market for labor.First Offense wrote:What the fuck is a market driven force other than one firm trying to get a competitive advantage and then all of the other firms realizing they have to match or suffer competitive consequences?

Wouldn't say it was a priority, but something I expected. Keep in mind I made my decision before bonuses were announced in fall 2014. Before 2014, they had been pretty shitty. Never planned on staying more than a couple years, so 25k over two years didn't seem like that big of a deal when weighed against how much I liked the firm vs. the other ones I had offers from that followed market bonuses. (I suppose I could have switched during 3L, but I didn't). But now the difference is up to 40k over 2 years just in base comp, plus whatever I lose out on bonuses. That's untenable to me.rpupkin wrote:I'm not sure JD even matches base comp after your first couple of years, at least not consistently. I honestly don't understand why someone who prioritizes market compensation would choose JD.Anonymous User wrote:Not in total comp of course, but they basically do in base comp. Which, as an incoming associate, is what I care about at the moment. I, and I assume everyone else who accepted an offer from JD, knew what they were getting into in terms of getting forever nobonused. But I accepted that on the understanding that my base comp would at least still be market. It's just ridiculous that every firm I turned down, save maybe one at this point, has moved to 180.rpupkin wrote:I don't think JD really matched the market before this increase. Not sure why that would change now.Anonymous User wrote:Can we change the title to shame JD into matching? This is getting ridiculous.

Am I the only one unsympathetic to secondary markets like Houston/Atl/Miami bitching about not getting 180k? If we could drop Houston offices down to 145k and raise NYC to 200k I'd do that in a heartbeat.

stfu people in other markets getting overpaid is exactly what leads to NYC pay stagnating for 10 years.BigZuck wrote:+1BigZuck wrote:People ITT begrudging other people ITT making more money is really neat

Ensuring that there is proper coverage on vacation is requirement #1 when I switch firms.El Pollito wrote:I billed like 20 hours on a 4-day vacation. let the hunger games begin.JohannDeMann wrote:after the upcoming layoffs that kick out the unprofitable people.Anonymous User wrote:El Pollito wrote:when is it cool to start whining about being underpaid again? 2 years?

Opposite, secondary markets catching up with NY comp is what drove NY to raise.Mlk&Ckies wrote:stfu people in other markets getting overpaid is exactly what leads to NYC pay stagnating for 10 years.BigZuck wrote:+1BigZuck wrote:People ITT begrudging other people ITT making more money is really neat

At the retreat, they (Rothman and Jaspan) indicated that the raises happened right after their last management committee meeting, so there's no decision yet. They mentioned the next meeting isn't until near the end of the month. They stated their intent is to be competitive geographically, so likely good news for major markets and questionable news for other offices (which isn't a surprise by any means, given how the firm is organized; raising all secondaries to $180k would cost Foley a lot more than it would many other firms). Hopefully it still means something for those other offices, but we'll see.Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:Foley cockteased today. Probably no decision until after an end-of-the-month management committee meeting.
what did they say? I'm assuming SA at the retreat?

honestly, many did and they are awesome and i won't forget it. it just takes one person not to care. it's also harder to force people to cover when you're not super senior, so it was cool that people many years senior to me took my work on.PennBull wrote:Yes.Br3v wrote:Coverage = associates who step in while you're on vacation?PennBull wrote:Ensuring that there is proper coverage on vacation is requirement #1 when I switch firms.El Pollito wrote:I billed like 20 hours on a 4-day vacation. let the hunger games begin.JohannDeMann wrote:after the upcoming layoffs that kick out the unprofitable people.Anonymous User wrote:El Pollito wrote:when is it cool to start whining about being underpaid again? 2 years?
