Sat one table over from a cravath partner at Bouley last night. She only ordered the $300 bottle of wine, declined the special.

Lol at the people who went to absolutely disgusting trash schools like NW, Georgetown and Berkeley ragging on CLS. Nobody at CLS considers those schools to be peer. CLSers at top firms like dpw and S&C typically have a 175+ on the lsat just like at YLS or HLS. Ppl of that caliber generally don’t even exist at lower T14. Every time I see a lower T14 loser at a V5, I can’t help but feel they’re diluting the prestige of the institution. Below median garbage.Man from Nantucket wrote:Yale/Columbia > DebevoiseClearly wrote:*Yale/ColumbiaCobretti wrote: Oh my god we get it, you went to Columbia. Give it a rest man.

Debevoise and their Yale/Columbia median associate similarly look down at S&C.Anonymous User wrote:Lol at the people who went to absolutely disgusting trash schools like NW, Georgetown and Berkeley ragging on CLS. The funny thing is Columbia is just the poor man's NYU. I mean why spend 3 years uptown when you could be downtown?

Re: NYC to 200k
As an in-house guy, I'd say we sort of do. We generally ask for a list of people who will be staffed on a matter, and I will usually take a quick look at the bios for associates. While I don't specifically care where the associate went to school, I do like to see strong academics. T3 Summa, LR, etc. is fine, but if no honors or LR I expect to see a T14 school on the resume. For the most part, people without these credentials don't get hired by biglaw in the first place. How much I care about academics may depend on the engagement. If it's just outsourcing basic work due to capacity issues, I care a lot less than if it's a particularly large/complex matter. I also care a lot less about academics for partners because they've been practicing long enough that they have their own independent reputations.yomisterd wrote:companies don’t care where the associates at the law firm they hire went to school.Anonymous User wrote:Out of that list, K&E is the one that does not belong, not Debevoise. Like DPW, CSM and CGSH, the median lawyer at Debevoise attended Columbia; the median lawyer at Kirkland attended Cornell.Man from Nantucket wrote: How many Debevoise associates do we have in this thread?
spotted the straight through
Also, as an aside, I really don't care how much firms pay their associates. We care about the bills to us. Usually, it's not high billing rates that result in sticker shock, it's inefficiency. I have no problem paying $1,500 for a partner's time if they efficiently resolve an issue. But a $600 an hour partner who dithers around can get expensive quick. So a firm that has high billing rates but generates a lot of business which it handles efficiently can be a very good deal. A "cheap" firm that tries to milk the engagement is far worse.

Not necessarily. Someone could raise to 200k and not give the summer bonus. Looks like STB is trying to hedge against a raise to 200k without having to do it themselves.toast and bananas wrote:Welp I guess there goes $200k - congrats STB folks, that summer bonu$ is badass

It's a risky tactic, though. If someone else goes to 200k, STB has to go to 200k and *also* pay summer bonuses. I think they had already planned summer bonuses and were beaten to the punch by Milbank's salary increase and had to scramble.1styearlateral wrote:Not necessarily. They could delay the raise to next year if they want to hedge.Anonymous User wrote:It's a risky tactic, though. If someone else goes to 200k, STB has to go to 200k and *also* pay summer bonuses. Re: NYC to 200k
There's no way STB would let itself pay less in salary (or total comp, for at least some class years, if someone went to 200k but didn't pay a summer bonus) than Cravath/S&C/DPW/etc. for even a month let alone six months to a year.nealric wrote:They could delay the raise to next year if they want to hedge.Anonymous User wrote:It's a risky tactic, though.
