In other words, the big law boomer partner is communicating like a millennial. I'm telling y'all: Millennials and Boomers have way more in common than either realizes.Anonymous User wrote:It also lacked punctuation and (any) capitalization.Mr. Fancy wrote:Pls handle. I was told the problem with typos is they make it harder for someone to trust your substantive work product, which makes sense if you're more junior. I agree a typo isn't a big deal though.

If someone does good work but you "don't trust it" because of spelling errors that's just dumbAnonymous User wrote:I was told the problem with typos is they make it harder for someone to trust your substantive work product, which makes sense if you're more junior. I'm a young Gen-X'er, so both of your questions are off by a few years. And, really, what did anyone do to deserve the life of an associate at any age? But I think it's easier to deal with the stress and nonsense when you're in your 30s.seespotrun wrote:

I suppose if a client ever bothers to read any of your shit and nobody fixes it, they probably can't figure out if your arguments are shitty, but they can probably tell if you can't spell.Anonymous User wrote:I was told the problem with typos is they make it harder for someone to trust your substantive work product, which makes sense if you're more junior. Yeah I mean spending time and mental energy on somethign that can be fixed down the line by an assistant instead of concentrating on substantive issues makes so much sense.Anonymous User wrote:I was told the problem with typos is they make it harder for someone to trust your substantive work product, which makes sense if you're more junior. At this point I just assume that everything in associate life runs counter to common sense and this is one of those things.Desert Fox wrote:That's what people say but I think that is dumb. Especially since partners make typos too. Even the best writers have editors. It's really hard to spot your own typos since you know what you mean.Anonymous User wrote:I was told the problem with typos is they make it harder for someone to trust your substantive work product, which makes sense if you're more junior. I think typos are most important when you first start off have no reputation. One negative and people just write you off.
But it's absurd to not trust a person because of a typo. And you just know the people who do it would be just as butthurt if someone did it to them.
Worse some partners have personal pet peeves that aren't real rules. But you are retarded if you don't instinctively follow their rules.

If you do bad substantive work you will get a much worse reputation and piss ppl off much more bc they actually have to do work to fix your shit

I think the concept of what is good substantive work can be so nebulous at times that bad lawyers will think your argument is bad because of dumb things like typos rather than the merits of said arguments.fats provolone wrote:If you do bad substantive work you will get a much worse reputation and piss ppl off much more bc they actually have to do work to fix your shit

I mean if ur really prone to mistakes I guess spend more time double checking but u only have so much time and effort to spend on tasks I wouldn't waste it extensively spell checking

Re: New associate fuck up thread (and tips for slacking)
I think the real issue with typos is they call attention to the fact that 85% of what lawyers do is overpriced common sense. If you were doing incredibly insightful analysis of some complex thing then a typo is whatever. If you're basically writing a memo that explains in 2000 words that the law in some area is exactly what you would expect it to be, then any old typo might be the last straw that makes a client say why the hell am I paying these people to turn out this garbage.

The i-bankers I've worked with make a ton of mistakes/typos all the time. Although they have bad/worse hours, that's what makes me think i-banking might be better than law...it's hard to be 100% on all the time in law when you're working 12-14+ hours a day. But I could totally work 16 hours a day and not GAF. (And yes, the rest of the US still only working 8 hours a day...)
