Does anyone know how many alternates are included with first round offers?

Nope. Your guess is as good as any. It probably also varies from component to component.

I think it varies by component. If you look at the Community threads from last year, there are some revealing posts. For example, it looks like Crim didn't identify any alternates at first.

How do you access community threads from last year? You mean on avue?

Also, to OP of the original question, Deana's post on finalist designations this year is telling:
Another response to a private inquiry that may be of general benefit.

Components may identify finalists at any time. We set an initial deadline to ensure that the Program continues to move forward, but it is permissible for components to identify additional finalists at any time of their discretion.

In some cases, components have focused on their first-round offer candidates with very little coverage in the way of alternates. I expect that some of these components will identify additional finalists.

For this reason, we do not notify "nonfinalists" until later in the review process. Once it is clear that a component will not select any further finalists, I will notify non-finalists.

In cases where the candidate interviewed with more than one component, I cannot update online status until all components have informed me that they will not select additonal finalists.

Some components do reference checks prior to identifying finalists; some do reference checks after identifying finalists but before issuing offers. Some are faster than others. Much depends on the reviewer's workload and how accessible the references are (and how fast they respond).
So it definitely varies by component and some may designate none. For those that do initially select alternates, I would guess they just try to guess how many people are going to accept offers and try to take enough from the pool of candidates they're willing to offer to ensure hiring goals are met.

I realize I'm probably the only one here who interviewed for ICF, but the wait is killing me. There's been no info, whatsoever. At least tax was nice enough to say they'd be late.

So you can just look back through the Community forum to 2013. For ATR, it said explicitly that they only selected as many finalists as they plan to make offers to. I'm sure the practice might vary by year but maybe that's the case again this year and they're just figuring out section assignments. Also noticed that finalists were selected on December 6th and the hiring completed announcement did not come until Jan. 23rd.

Sorry to burst bubbles, but I know I am an ATR alternate. I was not in the first group of finalists

How do you know this? Do you mean not in the first group of finalists announced on Monday?

Yeah, the first group of finalists were not all offered. Not sure the grouping means anything.

Well, the one person on here who is definitely going to ATR(DC) was a Crim II section offer. The Civil sections may still be sorting through where to assign people.

Just want to say once more for the ATR people, if you were a finalist or offered, please input your info on the spreadsheet if you have not already. The more representative that is the more we can discern from it.

My ATR(DC) offer was section-specific (a civil section that I had previously interned for).

Were you the person who had offers from both DC and NY ATR?

You received a 2014 ATR(DC) offer and you're not catinthewall?

Yes, sorry, habit of hitting anon reply button. I was trying to be helpful and provide some SA about how the sections might be choosing people before offers go out.

Thanks! You caused a mini panic. We'll stick to theory that Crim is special and you're special.

Yes, for my own benefit (read: sanity), I'll read that as being related to catinthewall's dual-offer status.

Sorry sorry sorry! I'm still following because I have some friends from law school and my ATR internship who are waiting to hear back. I don't mean to create any additional stress for anyone. I'm also stressing about the CalBar results coming out tomorrow night...

Most people fret about bar results but most, almost all pass. The odds are definitely in your favor, especially considering your past success you've shared with us. But we get it.

Have your friends from ATR been selected as finalists? The more finalists and less offers we have, the more things look like they haven't given many offers.

Thanks for keeping an eye on us. As you said before, hopefully we'll meet again in real life. Maybe to get our token photo with Loretta Lynch next fall.

One has an ATR offer but is waiting to hear back from other components (he cannot tell if they selected him as a finalist because he already has finalist status from ATR).

The other is waiting on news from the ICF.

Is there really a thing where we all get together in DC next fall? Like an orientation? That would be so cool. 8)

I think I recall seeing photos in attorneys offices of their Honors class with the AG. Interesting that your friend has an offer, is it for a civil section? Maybe all first-round offers have gone out.

Hrmm...well maybe encourage him to share with others? We're all in this waiting game together and with the anonymity, there's no cost to sharing. If multiple civil sections have offered, I think that's pretty well settles it unless maybe there's a couple sections that can't get around to making a quick phone call which seems unlikely.
