Just my husband and me so far, both in early to mid 20s, and probably will get a pet dog later. You might consider Rice Military, which is just north of River Oaks/northwest of Montrose. Lots of new luxury apts there, but you can also get a 3-bdrm townhome for ~400k or so. Close to a lot of good amenities and has a solid vibe (lots of folks in their 20s/early 30s).
Schools are rather poor, but as you don't have kids that's not a problem.

Wife and I live in an apartment complex in Montrose; about 800-900 square feet and it's ~1700 all in with utilities (1600 base). Pretty happy with it and it's nice (quiet, pool, nice gym, great front desk) and we'll have lived here 4 years...considering either renewing or buying a house.
Wow! Four years and happy with the same apartment tell a lot. Mind if I ask which apartment complex it is?
