Agree that meeting was bullshit. Everything he said SHOULD be the bare minimum. It’s not going above and beyond. And no data is just so we can’t compare notes. So much for transparency.

You could glean the key facts. They're not going to blast firm statistics for people to record or take screenshots.

Higher multiples than usual year. No cap on bonus for high billers. All associates in good standing get above market bonuses.

We will see how it turns out with the actual numbers.

Bummer (though predictable) that they didn't give us the actual numbers. Looks like we'll need to self report here to get a sense of the multiples.

I think the purpose was to hype, boost morale and express gratitude. Not bootlicking, because it's all talk until the bonus memos are sent out. But I don't think the meeting was anything to really complain about -- they basically said bonuses will be huge (especially for ppl who worked a lot) and said thank you.

As someone who had a very high year (not even going to say how many hours for fear of outing myself), I'll wait until the bonus memos come out to decide whether to complain or not. Thankfully we have this thread to chart our own bonus data.

I can’t tell if you’re serious but the attitude is terrible... you just got promised guaranteed above market bonuses even for folks who billed like, 1400 hours, and you’re still kvetching? Unreal.

They sell us the same crap with "every associate will get above-market bonuses" this is not new. We will see when the numbers come out, but the fact is there has never been an ounce of compensation transparency from the K&E partnership. The "good standing" and other qualifiers they put on limits the pool of associates that get at (or above) market bonuses. By the way, I promise you that no one is billing 1400 hours and getting at or above market, so you need to quit drinking that kool-aid and stop licking those boots. I'd be surprised if someone was billing 1600 and got market bonus.

I know someone with around 1600 who got above market bonus before. The good standing thing isn't some mysterious qualifier, it means you didn't get a four or worse. It would be incredibly easy for someone to out them for lying about that.

I'm still holding my breath for when I see the actual bonus, but this is just a weird troll.

I've been pretty unhappy with the communications around bonuses this year, but not sure how you're arguing with every associate getting a market or above bonus. I have multiple data points of people sub-1600 and getting like 1.05x and I've never heard of K&E paying anything less than a full market bonus. Kassof explicitly said that "good standing" covers almost 99% of associates.

Whether they'll let you stick around at 1600 for long is a different issue but K&E has never been in the business of screwing associates out of their bonus.

Don't want this to come across as koolaid drinking either because I think plenty of people billing 2500 hours or something crazy like that have the right to roll their eyes. The firm is rolling in money and acting like they're making it rain by paying them 1.5x instead of 1.3x, which just isn't that big of a bump. But they are also taking care of all associates in a pretty ridiculous year in all-in-all so I find it tough to complain.

Mmmm no, they don’t. They actually stated on the call that more than 99% of associates firmwide are in good standing so unless you’re into qanon levels of conspiracy, I think you can take it as factual that 99% of associates are getting above market bonuses, regardless of billables.

I rage against the bootlicking as much as anyone, but getting pissy about one good thing that firm is doing is just super counterproductive. Biglaw is not uniquely bad - I have plenty of friends working awful hours who DONT have a lockstep industry that is consistently pressured into paying upper middle class salaries.

So yeah, keep the pressure up, but chill out with the unnecessary anger.

This is straight up not true. And I see others have pointed it out so whatever.

Disclosure: NSP who has had sub 2000 years and still received an above market bonus in those years. Work a ton of hours, and it arguably doesn't do enough (and fair play to the superstars who do have a good argument that they're worth more). But for modest or low billers, this is and has been for a while an excellent place to work compensation-wise relative to other firms.

1850 anon here. Corporate. I had a slow year because of covid but I'm otherwise well regarded in my group. 50 of that was pro bono btw.
