Jenner is a good place for litigation, you should bid on them.

Bid on other firms like Winston & Strawn etc as backup and use all 40 bids. If you don't get an interview beyond #20 - which is very possible, you could always request one. There shouldn't be a problem with that since you have a decent GPA and LR.

Anonymous User wrote:3.8x, law review, ideally would like to be in Chicago or to a slightly lesser extent DC (ties to both). I've thoughtfully considered the firms but hastily threw together the order. I'm worried I need more backup options.

1. Sidley (Chicago lit)
2. Mayer Brown (Chicago lit)
3. McDermott (Chicago)
4. Jones Day (Chicago)
5. King & Spalding (Chicago)
6. Weil (NY)
7. Skadden (Chicago)
8. Latham (Chicago)
9. Cleary (NY)
10. Cravath (NY)
11. Kirkland (Chicago)
12. Perkins Coie (Chicago)
13. Ropes (Chicago)
14. Paul Weiss (NY)
15. Sidley (DC)
16. Jones Day (DC)
17. Covington (DC)
18. Cleary (DC)
19. Sullivan & Cromwell (NY)
unless something changed in the last 2 years you def don't need to put Mcdermott #1. i got them at #11. don't they have like 60 or 80 slots? You should keep sidely #1 and Mayer #2. if sidely is doing only lit with twenty slots, they will go super high cuz every chicago lit person wants them. i'd switch kirkland and weil. i don't know if you'd get them at 11. ropes and perkins should be long gone by 12 and 13, so consider whether you want to bid them at all. i'd move cravath down and throw winston at 10. cravath could be gotten in the teens, if not later. also put jenner maybe at 9 (if you wanna bid them). don't think cleary needs to be so high either (they went as low as 23 in my year)

As bidding is almost about to wrap up I’d like share a couple of thoughts. I can’t stress how important it is bid on NY firms. I recall a number of students last year that strictly bid Chicago and struck out. Most of the Chicago firms have smaller classes so remember that even if you meet a respective firms GPA requirements, it is still an uphill battle because of the limited spots and because, for diversity purposes, firms don’t typically like to stack up their SA class from one particular school. For example, if a Chicago firm is expecting a class of 8 total SAs, maybe one or two of them would be from NW. With this in mind, it is important to remember to maximize your opportunities this summer and not be picky. The most important thing is to get a SA offer that will translate into a full time offer. That way, if you don’t like the firm or market, you will have significantly higher chances of landing your preferred firm or market the following summer. Best of luck.

^^ this is very very true. I know too many people from my year with great grades that struck out cuz they bid only dc or Chicago or something. I also know someone who had around a 3.5 and was transactional and was from Chicago. This person struck out in Chicago but landed a V10 in New York.

And you all should be bidding like 25-40 firms unless you have a pre-oci offer.

move DPW up to the top 4 or so. It can go pretty high if they still only have 20 slots. not sure about the others, sorry i can't be more helpful.

With 5 pre-OCI CBs, I generally think you should focus more on making sure you get interviews with higher-ranked firms and focus less on maximizing interviews. Your bid list looks tailored to yield the most interviews possible but you seem to be risking missing out on interviews you should be targeting more with your grades (Davis Polk, Cleary, Paul Weiss, etc.)

Would you really want to work at Cahill or Cadwalader if you had any other offer? Both of those firms are somewhat notorious for pushing people into their (narrow and difficult) corporate groups.

3.66, secondary journal, targeting Chicago Lit. (Then DC, NYC in that order).
Screener with Mayer DC so not bidding them OCI. Don't feel like bidding Jones Day (do I need to?).

Does this make sense?
What firms should I slot in after 18? I'm planning on using all 40 bids, but after 18 it's kind of a mish-mash.

1 Sidley Austin (Lit) Chicago IL 20
2 Foley Chicago IL 40
3 Katten Chicago IL 40
4 DLA Piper Chicago IL 42
5 Kirkland & Ellis Chicago IL 80
6 Jenner & Block Chicago IL 60
7 Latham & Watkins Chicago IL 51
8 Schiff Hardin Chicago IL 20
9 Winston & Strawn Chicago IL 60
10 McDermott Chicago IL 80
11 Perkins Coie Chicago IL 20
12 Skadden Chicago IL 60
13 Weil NY NY 60
14 Millbank NY NY 16 40
15 Cleary Gottleib NY NY 40
16 White & Case Chicago 28
17 Fried Frank DC 20
18 WILLKIE FARR & GALLAGHER LLP NY 40

3.8x GPA, Law Review, Moot Court, Affinity Group VP, TA, diverse

Thoughts on bid list? Top 10 firms on the list are the "must interviews" for me. The other firms I don't feel strongly about, but would of course prefer to maximize screeners. Kirkland I cannot miss - they are my #1 and are expecting me to interview.

3. Jenner & Block Chicago
4. McDermott Will & Emery Chicago
5. Kirkland & Ellis Chicago

Thoughts on bid list? 3.8, Law Review, Moot Court, TA, Substantial Work Experience, Diversity Applicant. Litigation oriented.

Top 10 firms are "must have" interviews. No Skadden is intentional. Kirkland I cannot afford to miss out on - they are my number one firm and are also expecting me to interview.

All firms outside the top 10 are ranked only by criteria, but I didn't order them in terms of likelihood of success. Would be great to get tips on switching the order to get more screeners.

1. Sidley Austin (Litigation) Chicago
2. Mayer Brown Chicago
3. Jenner & Block Chicago
4. McDermott Will & Emery Chicago
5. Kirkland & Ellis Chicago
6. Latham & Watkins Chicago
7. Winston & Strawn Chicago

A few thoughts:
1. Why are you bidding on Gammage and O’Melveny in your top ten? Those seem very out of place. Gammage isn’t ranked on chambers and I’ve never heard of it. Unless they have a very low number of spots, you can probably drop them down and still get an interview. Why one firm in SF? Seems very out of place on your bid list.

2. Did you intentionally exclude V10 NYC firms (S&C, STB, Cravath)? With your profile, there’s really no ceiling on where you’d be competitive (you might be able to snag a Wachtell screener).

3. You don’t seem very likely to get any Chicago interviews after around #10. Might be worth thinking about if you’d rather stay in Chicago at a lower ranked firm or work at a NYC V10. Id suggest replacing those Chicago firms with NYC V10s.

Thank you! Anon from above.

Point taken RE: V10's in NY and lower-ranked Chicago firms.

Here's a revised order that adds in more NY firms and bumps the unlikely Chicago bids to the end so I can honestly tell them I bid on them in case I need to canvas Chicago post-OCI for a job.

Is Kirkland a safe bet for a screener at that ranking? It seems as if it should be, but really don't want to get it wrong.

My priorities are

[1] Securing a litigation job
[2] Chicago highly preferred - The first 9 firms are my main interests
[3] NY is acceptable, although not ideal, if Chicago doesn't pan out
[4] O'Melveny and Osborn are firms I could see myself working for just under the top Chicago firms but above any of the NY firms because of personal connections to those areas.

If I end up in New York, priority is quality of litigation practice, prestige for post-firm job opportunities, and quality of associate training. I did shuffle the NY firms somewhat to reflect the number of interview slots, however.

1. Mayer Brown (20 Slots) Chicago
2. Sidley Austin (Litigation) (20 Slots) Chicago
3. Jenner & Block (20 Slots) Chicago
4. Kirkland & Ellis (80 Slots) Chicago
5. Jones Day (40 Slots) Chicago
6. Ropes & Gray (40 Slots) Chicago
7. Latham & Watkins (51 Slots) Chicago
8. Winston & Strawn (60 Slots) Chicago
9. McDermott Will & Emery (80 Slots) Chicago
10. O'Melveny & Meyers (20 slots/2) San Francisco
11. Paul Weiss (20 Slots) New York
12. Davis Polk (20 Slots) New York
13. Osborn Maledon (20 Slots) Phoenix
14. Cahill Gordon (20 Slots) New York
15. Cadwalader (20 Slots) New York
16. Sullivan & Cromwell (40 Slots) New York
17. Cravath (40 Slots) New York
18. Cleary Gottlieb (40 Slots) New York
19. Wilkie Farr (40 Slots) New York
20. Fried Frank (40 Slots) New York
21. Simpson Thatcher (40 Slots) New York
22. Weil (60 Slots) New York
23. Baker McKenzie (40 Slots) Chicago
24. DLA Piper (42 Slots) Chicago
25. Foley & Lardner (40 Slots) Chicago
26. Katten Munchin (40 Slots) Chicago
27. Drinker Biddle (40 Slots) Chicago
28. White & Case (28 Slots) Chicago
29. Morgan Lewis (20 Slots) Chicago
30. Perkins Coie (20 Slots) Chicago
31. Vedder Price (20 Slots) Chicago
32.McGuire Woods (20 Slots) Chicago
33. Arnold & Porter (20 Slots) Chicago
34. Greenberg Traurig (20 Slots) Chicago
35. Dentons (20 Slots) Chicago
36. Bryan Cave (20 Slots) Chicago

Anonymous poster from above.

Point taken. I've dropped most of the Chicago firms down to the bottom except for the top nine, which I really want. I added in the New York firms. I want to be able to truthfully tell the Chicago firms I bid on them in case I need to canvas the city post-OCI

Priorities for me are:

[1] Securing litigation job
[2] Working in Chicago - would take a lower-quality Chicago litigation position over NY
[3] NY is acceptable, but only if I cannot get litigation in Chicago for some reason.
[4] O'Melveny and Osborn Maledon (more slots than Gammage) are because of personal connections to those cities. I could see putting them over any NY firm b/c of personal ties.

If I end up in NY, priorities are [1] Quality of litigation practice [2] Quality of associate training [3] Prestige for post-departure job opportunities.

I did, however, adjust the rank order somewhat to reflect the number of interview slots for each firm.

1. Mayer Brown (20 Slots)
2. Sidley Austin (Litigation) (20 Slots)
3. Jenner & Block (20 Slots)
4. Kirkland & Ellis (80 Slots)
5. Jones Day (40 Slots)
6. Ropes & Gray (40 Slots)
7. Latham & Watkins (51 Slots)
8. Winston & Strawn (60 Slots)
9. McDermott Will & Emery (80 Slots)
10. O'Melveny & Meyers (20 slots/2)
11. Paul Weiss (20 Slots)
12. Davis Polk (20 Slots)
13. Osborn Maledon (20 Slots)
14. Sullivan & Cromwell (40 Slots)
15. Cravath (40 Slots)
16. Cleary Gottlieb (40 Slots)
17. Wilkie Farr (40 Slots)
18. Fried Frank (40 Slots)
19. Simpson Thatcher (40 Slots)
20. Cahill Gordon (20 Slots)
21. Cadwalader (20 Slots)
22. Weil (60 Slots)
23. Baker McKenzie (40 Slots)
24. DLA Piper (42 Slots)
25. Foley & Lardner (40 Slots)
26. Katten Munchin (40 Slots)
27. Drinker Biddle (40 Slots)
28. White & Case (28 Slots)
29. Morgan Lewis (20 Slots)
30. Perkins Coie (20 Slots)
31. Vedder Price (20 Slots)
32. McGuire Woods (20 Slots)
33. Arnold & Porter (20 Slots)
34. Greenberg Traurig (20 Slots)
35. Dentons (20 Slots)
36. Bryan Cave (20 Slots)

Some comments/tips:
- Overall I bid mostly Chi in top 10, with a few NY that I wanted to prioritize. Then NY in next 15, then after that I just bid smaller firms. This strategy was mostly effective since I got 20 screeners, 18 without the Detroit.
- All firms that separate out lit I bid transactional.
- I don't know how I got 43 bids, but I did somehow.
- Career services can help you with bidding but their advice is not more valuable than the info you will glean from TLS.
- If you really like a firm then put it top no matter what anyone else says. (Allow yourself a few such firms but makes sure they don't hurt your overall strategy.)
- I bid Sheppard randomly. It's actually a good firm that nobody was bidding because they didn't come to OCI last year. Moral of the story: fill up all your bid spots!
