Honestly, and sadly, I agree. I've discussed the Cravath move with a few Austin associates, and expectations are fairly low. No one seem super upset though, either. I guess we'll see.philosoraptor wrote:Will be interesting to see what happens in Austin. We have two major types of biglaw firms that compete for two types of associates: traditional Texas firms (e.g., BB, V&E, NRF) and West Coast-style tech-focused firms (e.g., Wilson, DLA, Pillsbury), all of which pay $160K. Andrews Kurth is the only one I can think of that's big in both. Small but very competitive market. I bet neither group needs to match to get good people to Austin, but if one firm in either group moves first, the rest will have to follow or risk their top associates jumping ship. Not sure how much pressure a match in Houston or Dallas would put on Austin firms, but I'm guessing not a lot.

Any chance of Wilson Sonsini going to 180? Some of us over in Palo Alto would appreciate some TLS speculation.

Re: Cravath's Spawn - the Wave of Copycats - RUNNING TALLY
Can we also create a part of the first post where we list all V50-100 firms and bold all those that have matched?
I think it's important to shame those firms that do not match New York market. To this end, we need to make it visually easy to see which do not pay market before recruiting time. This will help rising 2L students know which firms to completely forget about when it comes to bidding and comparing offers. Every competitive student at OCI this autumn should under no circumstances consider a firm that does not pay market, and the best way to do that is to make it as clear as possible to everyone which do not.
The more pressure we put on ALL firms to match, the more overall inflation in associate salaries there is, and the faster we reach $200k.

Can the OP include the offices affected by the raise in order to increase pressure on e.g. Californian and Texan firms to go to 180 show a clearer, fuller picture?
