What's the big deal if people don't want to out their city + car combo. That certainly narrows the universe.

The true long con. But mostly because the same person has posted a couple of different answers.PourMeTea wrote:how do you know that they're not posting lies and misleading others from their account and using anon to post the truth

Eh. With respect to importance, I'd say this thread is below median but easily above bottom 10% It's already more useful than every thread about USNWR or Vault rankings.A. my sedan came off the line when i was in 7th grade. i want to upgrade to a mk4 supra but it's impossible to justify when i drive a maximum of 2 days a week. currently just making credible threats to the SO that i'm gonna do it. expectation management is important.

Indeed it is. That's why tcr here is for you to threaten to purchase a car that is even more expensive and unnecessary than mk4 supra. When you then buy supra, your choice will seem reasonable by comparison.sprezz wrote:my sedan came off the line when i was in 7th grade. i want to upgrade to a mk4 supra but it's impossible to justify when i drive a maximum of 2 days a week. currently just making credible threats to the SO that i'm gonna do it. expectation management is important.

People with uber rich parents don't need to contribute to generic conversations on any topic related to consumption/personal finance/lifestyle because their lives are obviously so different from anyone else's in any material sense. That's why it's silly. It's like the editor-in-chief of YLJ going into the vale to explain their job search technique.Anonymous User wrote:Re: above. Making 240k v. 160k, etc. All associate biglaw salary is chump change compared to having multi-millions. If your parents want to give you stuff because they are rich, why wouldn't you take it? I don't see what the problem is. It's not like you're living off of them - you're still working a terrible job and paying your own rent, etc.

2005 Sunfire. It's in bad shape. Spedometer does not work as well. But no payments, and my dad still insures the car for some reason. Will probably change soon. Have no intention of buying a new car. If I ever go to some fancy firm event (unlikely) I'll rent a bmw for the evening. Only drive a block to the subway station and a block home.

I'm in-house now, but I drive a Alfa Romeo Spider (fair weather/weekend car- heavily modified with custom turbo setup, MS3 EFI) and a Mazdaspeed Miata (stock with autocross cheater tires
).

Re: Non-NYC Associates: What car do you drive?
It depends. I know rich parents who force their kids to take out federal loans for law school, then become lenders to their kids themselves (just to teach them lessons about money). I also know that my parents put a condition in their will/trusts saying that we can't touch the money until we're 50 (so that we don't become lazy). These types of parents never really give their kids anything while they are alive.People with uber rich parents don't need to contribute to generic conversations on any topic related to consumption/personal finance/lifestyle because their lives are obviously so different from anyone else's in any material sense. The biggest difference with respect to being a kid of rich parents is that you don't have to worry about saving enough for retirement (probably anyway), you can probably retire earlier than most, and if you end up losing your job or whatever, you'll have parents to fall back on.

I drive the same piece of shit car I have had since sophomore year in high school and give zero fucks. I will drive it until it breaks down.
Pretty much same here. I drive the car that my wife bought in high school for $10,000. It's missing a hub cap, and it's ugly, but it drives. I am saving hundreds of dollars a month by not buying something new. Also, I only drive it to and from work, so who cares? We drive the new car I bought my wife

Re: Non-NYC Associates: What car do you drive?
My 2000 Ford Taurus just crapped out this summer (the A/C died in May in TX, and the car had stalling issues in the winter), so I made the mistake of getting a new car (a Ford Fusion Hybrid). The car is nice, and I got a bunch of options on it, but I really should have gone with a 5 or 6 year old car and saved the payment. I rationalized it to myself because I'll probably drive the thing until 2030 or so. I do my own maintenance, so I tend to be able to get my cars to last until 200k before they start having so many issues that they aren't worth the effort.
I seem to be surrounded at work with a bunch of associates that drive BMW/Audis and partners that drive Mercedes/Exotic Makes. Occasionally I'll run into an associate driving an early 2000s Corolla or Camry, but they're few and far between.

There's a huge cost of ownership difference though.Desert Fox wrote:How much more is a BMW v. a Camry anyway? It's not that different is it? At least a three series.
