Thanks for the above. As a follow up - would taking time to invest in another test (e.g. GMAT) and performing well be worth it to provide demonstrated standardized testing ability if your present scores are mediocre?

Also first anon, when you say that BCG didn't care about your standardized scores, what do you mean?

2L at CCN here. Already accepted a SA.

Can I interview next year for a full time offer? Any tricks for getting into the b school on campus world?

Don't take the GMAT unless your plan is b-school down the road. Really. Spend the time either networking, or c'mon just practice cases.

BCG recruited at my school and took my resume but otherwise didn't care at all about my academic credentials (didn't ever ask for a law school transcript, undergraduate transcript, etc.). Same for McK except they asked for a SAT breakdown, IIRC.

Is anyone recruiting at McK this cycle? I've had my second round 2-3 weeks ago and silence since then. Has anyone had a final round?

You can definitely interview for full-time. If you're at a t-14, no need to really network into the bschool as typically they are protective about their career resources and won't let you leverage their career services (YMMV of course). I also didn't have an easy time talking to the consulting club, etc. on my campus. It's dumb and unfortunate, but the law school is pretty bad at helping students with nontraditional options. You have to be prepared to do hustling on your own once you get an interview in order to prepare.

To the poster who asked about taking the GMAT, absolutely not (unless you want to do the jd/mba). Definitely a terrible waste of time, and as another poster mentioned better to practice cases.

For those of you going through the process, feel free to ask additional questions. Don't get too nervous about wait time between 2nd and 3rd round - for some reason, that was a huge lag time for me as well (about 2.5 weeks).

To above McK question:

I had a 2nd round on a Friday, heard back on the following Monday. Getting ready for my final round.

They seem very on top of getting good news to people ASAP, and I've been told more than once that even at later stages, sometimes they just don't have time to send out bad news. But that's just one person's experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

That said, nervous for final round. I skipped all my school's on campus recruiting, so I've got a lot riding on this.

Just curious - but why? Seems like securing a job through OCI would have been a very low cost proposition.

In any case, good luck!

Assuming this was directed at me - I don't want any fallback plans. I didn't come here to get a job, I came here to get a job I want. The temptation of easy money was something I wanted to remove.

If I want to do MBB consulting but I am not sure if I can get into it straight from a JD, should I consider taking the GMAT? Will doing well on the test allow me to skip the PST or any other quantitative screening?

Can't speak as to whether it will help or not (I expect if you kill it that may help some, but if not it seems like a lot of downside), but it will not let you skip the PST.

The PST is not that difficult. It's like a quant LSAT. You get data, are asked a question, and then draw a conclusion. You often have to do math to do so.

How does it make no sense? I'm at one of the best schools in the country, I have opportunities people would kill for, and I'm willing to put myself out there. Maybe you're happy with any job that pays great, but I'm not. I want more than that. My only fear was giving up because a biglaw job is practically guaranteed to someone with my grades and, therefore, "easy money." By taking away that option, I ensured that I had to keep working my ass off to get what I wanted. It may be riskier...but not everyone on TLS is a single-minded robot whose only worry in the world is financial.

To OP: Thanks for all your help in this thread. I had my final round earlier this week and got calls today that I got the offer. Appreciate your answering questions in here! It's great that other people here pursue some of the lesser-discussed alternative options and are willing to help out.

I know this is an old post, but I'm hoping that someone can see my post...

My question is 1) what are my chances (non T14) to get an interview at MBB? 2) are there any other business consulting firms that recruit law students? Which one?

In addition, during the case interviews, brainteaser questions like "how many flights do you think are in the sky right now?" come up?

I'd really appreciate your help!

from a T30, chances are supposedly low to make it pass the screen unless your biz background is exceptional. slightly higher if you're in a less competitive region (e.g., applying to a TX office rather than NY). MBB doesn't do brainteasers, just cases + fit.

i haven't seen non-MBB consulting firms recruit at my T6 but i'm sure you could try latching on to the firms that are coming to your university's b-school, if there is one.

Hi there,

OP here.

1) To my knowledge, MBB unfortunately does not recruit out of the t14, and at least anecdotally in my summer class there were none outside as well. I'm not sure if your particular experience would change that or not, but I think they have a hard cutoff at t14.

2) Definitely look into PWC (I forget which division it is, but search this forum for a discussion). Not sure about others.

Hope that was helpful, even though #1 was probably not the answer you wanted :(

Hi there,
CCN student here and just got an email from McKinsey for IWIA. It seems like a basic screening interview but I'm really unfamiliar with this whole process.

I'm wondering if the IWIA is different from the PST? Or is that part of the session?
I'm assuming after this round, the second round includes the case interview, is that correct?

Any advise on how to prep for the IWIA? I have taken a look at the site and plan to work on cases, but is there anything else you would suggest?

Thanks for your time!

Others seem to disagree but I think if you hustle/network you can definitely land an interview at MBB. And once you are in the interview room they wont really care about your law school/grades. These firms are generally looking for those with raw ability to crush thru cases and much less prestige obsessed as law firm counterparts. Of course not going to t14 will make it harder for you in the sense that mbb (at least mck) seem to actively participate in oci at t14. However, if you hustle and get someone to forward your resume i really doubt mbb will turn you down just cuz u didnt go to "t14"

did it yesterday. first part is PST then second half is two group case interviews. its very low key just do basic case prep and look at PST practice test

2L here at one of the HYS. Got dinged after the IWIA last year during OCI because the lack of sleep + firm CBs around the same time ( didnt get any offers, what a shitshow). I'm basically MBB or bust post graduation at this point, no interest to work for a firm afterwards.. Currently sitting on an offer from a nonprofit for the summer and currently looking at the best way to prep for MBB consulting for a FT position after graduation. Can one of you that landed a position give me some pointers on case prep as well as behavior prep in general?

Also 2L interested in FT recruiting. Anyone know about how that process is different than their summer recruiting from law schools?

Some tips:

1. Focus on quality prep rather than quantity prep (with people who've got offered or are actually consultants).
2. Drill specifically on McK/BCG style cases. These firms have their unique styles.
3. Look around the internet for the usual behavioral questions and prep them. Some of them you'll get in every interview ("How do you work in teams?")

Did you strike out of OCI because of personality or grades? Hopefully it's the latter, because the personality bar is significantly higher for MBB hiring than law firm hiring.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
