also, checking into this thread to vomit wisdom...spent the better part of teh past year in the process and ultimately went through an associate at my new firm
i cant stress enough how much better many firms today prefer you to go through someone at the firm...some send associates emails about hiring and ask them to reach out to their network, etc.

Is it worth getting in touch w/ someone if I'm only 1.5 years out of LS and have only been at a firm for 6 mos? Anyone have any suggestions? Don't know many associates at other firms and would like to keep it close to the vest.

Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
If you are around Boston, I really liked New England Legal Search. They didn't have the "used car salesman" feel (they actually were knowledgable and seemed to care about placing you somewhere good). I also liked Nancy at MLA for the same reason. There are so many bad recruiters out there. Rather than just posting bad ones, I think it would be helpful to all to post good ones.
I've got a friend in NYC who used MLA and was very happy but I cannot recall who he used.

If ur not happy, why not?
Just know that most recruiters are scummy.
Best thing to do is ask around for recc's.
Lateral.ly and LateralLink are good too if u just wanna search on ur own.
gobiglaw.com/goinhouse.com are decent too but not always super-current.

Cooley, Finnegan in both areas
Latham in DC for ee/cs...but there are others depending on type of practice cuz diff firms specialize in diff lit areas in diff offices

Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
I have a question related to the thread topic. I'm dealing with one recruiter who will be presenting my resume, etc. to a number of firms.
Is it proper to engage another recruiter who has exclusivity with a separate firm (and which the first recruiter will not be reaching out to)? Also, any special tips to make sure that the new recruiter doesn't spam my resume everywhere (besides asking new recruiter to refrain from doing so)? Any other protocol of which I should be aware?

Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
I would advise against using 2 recruiters if you can avoid it for the following reason. Recruiters will speak to firms generally about your background without necessarily giving out your resume to gauge if the firm is interested. something along the lines of "I have a 3rd year corporate associate who has worked on x types of matters and is interested in moving to this city, would you be interested in seeing the resume?" If the firm shows interest, the recruiter will check with you before submitting the resume.Anonymous User wrote:I have a question related to the thread topic. However, often times the firm can tell who the candidate is based on the brief generic description if another recruiter has already submitted your materials and they will let the second recruiter know. Firms hate dealing with multiple recruiters because they don't want to deal with splitting fees etc and may just find it easier to reject you if such a situation arises.
If you are set on using the 2 recruiters, probably best to keep them both informed on which firms they should absolutely not pursue
ETA: missed the part about the first recuiter not reaching out to the other firm. I think that should be okay in that case but make very clear to the second recruiter that he should not apply or discuss your candidacy with any other firm

Question Related to the Thread:
When applying to lateral as a junior, does it hurt you if you previously had a CB at the firm and they dinged you?
I didn't shit the bed or anything but I was definitely nervous in one of the partner interviews and knew I wouldn't get an offer. Obviously the answer is just apply, but I was curious if people had experience with this. It's frustrating to think that I would have been better off to have not applied as a law student or gotten dinged in the screener. This is for NY big law, top firm, transactional side but specialized group so I would potentially interview with the same partner (and definitely work with her/him if hired)

Mostly asking just because I'm not sure any kind of move is realistic at the point. Do firms actually hire people with my level of experience?Big Shrimpin wrote:Anonymous User wrote:Is it worth getting in touch w/ someone if I'm only 1.5 years out of LS and have only been at a firm for 6 mos? I lateraled as a junior to a boutique firm that rejected me from a 2L callback. no one cared and im pretty sure no one even knew or remembered. I doubt they keep files of 2Ls they rejected and that partner will definitely not remember you.Anonymous User wrote:Question Related to the Thread:

Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
Rec. + Q. I recently used Haven Recruiting to lateral into the TX market. My headhunter was very professional and seemed to be well connected to Texas firms.
This led to a possible offer and I will be following up with a hiring partner tomorrow. He said he'd like to discuss timing. Does anyone have a sense of reasonable timing to ask for a move across states. I'd like 1 to 1.5 months to close up matters at work and with my apt - think I can ask for that?

Thanks, that's good to hear. I was hoping that would be the case. Mine was as a 3L so I'm worried I may stick out a little more but I suspect they still interview a ton of people and wouldn't remember.Anonymous User wrote:I lateraled as a junior to a boutique firm that rejected me from a 2L callback. no one cared and im pretty sure no one even knew or remembered. Not unreasonable. Explain why you need 1-1.5 months to your new firm and just don't be demanding - ask if this is possible. I cannot imagine that they would be offended unless they are real assholes....in which case, you don't want to work for them anyways.Anonymous User wrote:Rec. + Q. Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
Thanks, this makes sense. I am really just interested in what's kind of "standard." I spoke to my recruiter (again, Haven has been very informed), and he said 1 week to review offer + a couple days for conflict check + 2 weeks notice to firm = 1 month simply to let the process play out. So I won't have to ask for or demand anything, just say I'd like to contribute as soon as I can and that will be around a month anyway.Jessep wrote:Not unreasonable. Re: Headhunters, Legal Recruiters, etc.
Seems like most posts in here relate to moving from firm to firm.
What about using headhunters to find inhouse positions? Alternatively, for one who isn't ready to leave the firm but will in the future is asking headhunters about inhouse gigs a good way to figure out what practice area to focus on?

Thoughts on headhunters that request resumes before telling you about positions?
Is this standard? I'm concerned about horror stories of headhunters spamming your resume all over the place, telling your fellow employees you are looking, etc.

They do that because they're scared you'll just apply on your own once you know the positions.Anonymous User wrote:Thoughts on headhunters that request resumes before telling you about positions?

Which is stupid because that typically means that they don't have exclusivity on the positions so there's no point in working with them.
If a headhunter calls me for an interesting position, I always make sure they have exclusivity.

How do you ask them if they have exclusivity? And why does it matter to you/me whether they are the only recruiter engaged?Old Gregg wrote:They do that because they're scared you'll just apply on your own once you know the positions.Anonymous User wrote:Thoughts on headhunters that request resumes before telling you about positions?
