I don't know if it's so much favoritism as it is just an entirely different train of thought. With 2Ls, they have more spots to fill and an entire summer to weed out weirdo qualities they missed during screeners and callback. Taking on 3Ls seems like it'd be more of a risk / require more deliberation since you don't get to vet them beyond interviews and there are fewer spots. Just my guess.
