Everyone at every firm seems to say that despite being told to go business casual on day one everyone wears a suit.

It's either that or be the only summer not wearing a suit.Anonymous User wrote:lol wth? if they say come in business casual you guys are really gonna roll up in a suit..? We were told business casual was fine, but I preferred to wear a dress pants/shirt and tie and store my jackets on hangers at work, putting one on as the day's events required (e.g. meeting with a partner, going to court, sitting in on a deposition, client meeting). Otherwise, when just working at my desk, I'd just roll up my sleeves, loosen my tie, and look business casual.

Nobody cares. If you show up in suit, they don't care because overeager summers do it every year. If you show up in biz cas, they don't care that you may look different than the majority of SAs because they specifically told you it was okay. You guys are seriously overthinking this.

I'm not overthinking it at all. I agree no one gives a shit.bk1 wrote:Nobody cares. If you show up in suit, they don't care because overeager summers do it every year. Exercise. Seriously. They are going to throw food and alcohol at you constantly.Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:On that note, what should we be doing in our down time this summer. bump also wondering this
Other than that, I'd recommend exploring the city (if you're not from there). Figure out where you'd want to live. Where you wouldn't want to live. Try out different churches. Try out different bars. Read. Get some summers together and join a rec league for softball or volleyball. Fill out your bar application (seriously, waiting until the last few weeks for this is awful). Call your parents. Call your siblings. For no reason at all. Go to a baseball game.
And then, seriously, go back to the gym.

Thanks! and what about down time while in work itself. What do you do when you have nothing to do for hours...

Find more work to do. The system for this will vary from firm to firm, but that's your best bet. Something with a written product that they can add to your summer file.Anonymous User wrote:Thanks! and what about down time while in work itself. Without being annoying, introduce yourself to attorneys in the group you want to practice in. Introduce yourself to attorneys from your school. Chat with your assistant.

I am starting my SA pretty soon, and have not heard back post-background check so do not know who the other summers are or what practice groups I will be in. Is this cause for concern? Not going to out the place.

Should I be alarmed about this?

You should be more alarmed that you'll come off as a nervous weirdo.Anonymous User wrote:I have no idea who i'm working with, what i'm getting paid, if it's business casual or more formal, etc. I start in one week...

I'm kind of assuming we'll get paid what Chambers said that firm paid last year. I'd love for it to be higher (ha, ha) but I highly doubt it would be lower.Anonymous User wrote:I have no idea who i'm working with, what i'm getting paid, if it's business casual or more formal, etc. I start in one week...

Chambers doesn't have it listed. It's a secondary market, satellite office of a big firm (500+), and there's no NALP form for some odd reason. Eh it's not a huge deal. i'm just happy to have a jobjbagelboy wrote:I'm kind of assuming we'll get paid what Chambers said that firm paid last year. Same. If "no one cares," it makes no sense to wear a suit.brotherdarkness wrote:Fuck it, I'm going biz cas on the first day.

And the internet explodes. When I say no one cares I mean no one else cares. I care. Although my firm leans toward the formal side.

I'm also CA business casual and planning to go biz cas on the first day. I guess I could bring a jacket to throw on if I feel weird. They told us the firm is business casual so it feels weird to suit up anyway when I wouldn't do that for any other job knowing what the dress code was.
I start next week.
