Re: What were bar stipends in 2012?
Latham gives $15,000 pre-tax for the bar. Associates are not eligible for bonuses until they have worked at the firm for a year though, so I bet it comes out pretty even compared to firms that give salary advances but end of the year bonuses.

Irell is $15k stipend + bar expenses + direct billing for relocation. One of the bests out there I think. Plus stub year bonuses.

Vinson & Elkins, $3K graduation bonus, bar prep + fees, direct bill for relocation, $10K salary advance, and stub bonus first year. Oh, and subsidized health insurance during the bar...not sure if we're counting this.

Which office? Was it in your offer letter or communicated later?Anonymous User wrote:Mayer Brown - $10K bar stipend, bar exam + fees, $3K relocation reimbursement.

I know at least some firms vary what they give by office.
For example, I've heard Jones Day gives 10k advance to nyc/chicago/etc but a 4k stipend for more secondary markets. 4k (closer to 3k post-tax) seems a little low to live on, even in secondary markets. Then again, stipend > advance.

What's the protocol if you go to a school in a different state, but you're from/have family within commuting distance in your firm's (major) market? Will they expect you to not have expenses/treat you differently? (Bearing in mind I don't know my firm's policy yet in the first place -- if the policy is just a general advance I guess it's up to me and doesn't matter anyway.)

You mean in terms of relocation benefits? It shouldn't matter.Anonymous User wrote:What's the protocol if you go to a school in a different state, but you're from/have family within commuting distance in your firm's (major) market? Yeah, thanks. Also, if a firm provides a stub bonus, when would that be sent out? At the end of your first (half) year? Upon graduation?

At least in NYC, stub bonuses seem like a thing of the past; but as I understand it, if a firm still does them, it issues them at the same time that everybody else at the firm gets their bonuses. That's usually something like the last couple weeks of December.Anonymous User wrote:Yeah, thanks. Also, if a firm provides a stub bonus, when would that be sent out? Get a part time job working as a baristaJO 14 wrote:7 months? They mentioned “incidentals” but since I live in my SA city, I kind of blew it off. . . perhaps not my best moment!
One V10 firm offered a salary advance of $10,000... and made their associates start in January. But no problem: Lot's of people can live off of $10,000 in borrowed money for 7 months.
IMO: $10K for 7 months does not work unless half the $25K for SA is set aside and figured in.

secondary market. it wasn't communicated directly in the letter, but someone who started last year mentioned that's what you get (plus, that's what it says on the website).Anonymous User wrote:Which office?
