Sounds similar to the sentiments I hear. I hope I will get a better sense this summer as to the classes I should take going forward. They are encouraging me to clerk, so I suppose I need to take classes that will help that goal.Anonymous User wrote:
I don't know if we are gonna be working at the same firm (tech transactions), but a top partner at my firm said "just take what interests you... we seriously don't care... we care if you pass the bar."

No matter where you would have ended up, I knew you would have been a superstar! And getting a 1L SA merely confirms it! Are you working in NY? Feel free to PM if you would rather not divulge such information publiclyr6_philly wrote:Thank you, very very happy! And lovely to talk with you again. Also:
is TCR. My sleep patterns from finals and mini vaca are so messed up. I can't sleep before 3 am either. Need to hit the gym hard soon so that I'm so tired I pass out early or something. Definitely don't want to fall asleep in my office on the first day. Not a good lookCyLaw wrote:Starting Monday. Less worried about the program this summer, more worried that my sleep schedule of "wake at noon, go to bed at 3 am" will screw me this Monday.

Very worried about the sleep stuff as a habitual 4 am-noon+ sleeper. Also worried about the lunch stuff and not abusing it or underusing it or whatever the proper balance is.

So excited! Just went on a shopping spree for business casual clothing. I start on Monday at 9am!
When does everyone else start?
To be honest though, I'm glad I get a break. I know some people that literally get a weekend off between finishing up exams and stating at a firm.

May 14th - August 3rd. Pretty nervous.
But my strategy during my 1L summer was just to be confident, smile, be friendly, go to most of the social events, and turn in good work on time. Worked well for me.

Ten weeks starting May 21. Large firm, small summer class, several assurances of firmwide 100% offer rate. Worried less about getting no-offered and (slightly) more about not fitting in in a new city that seems to have its own culture. But hey, they wouldn't have picked me if they didn't think I'd fit in, right?

Working for two Southern firms, offer rates are like 80% at each. So pretty good odds overall, but still nervous. Hoping as a diversity candidate I fill some minority checkbox.

Did you feel "behind the curve" when you were a 1L SA or was basically everyone at the same skill level?Stanford4Me wrote:Stress? Nah. Looking forward to my second summer with the same firm. Living the dream.

Hard to say.shoeshine wrote:Did you feel "behind the curve" when you were a 1L SA or was basically everyone at the same skill level?Stanford4Me wrote:Stress? Nah. Looking forward to my second summer with the same firm. Living the dream.
I didn't know what I didn't know last year, and if I knew what I didn't know I would just research like crazy and make sure I understood what I was working on (on my first project, which dealt with the SEC's enforcement of Regulation AB, I spent a good day doing background research on the regulation before actually answering the question the partner asked of me). Having taken courses that are a lot more relevant to corporate work than the courses I took 1L year, I feel like I have a better grasp of the projects I'll be working on and I now know sources outside of Westlaw/Lexis that are helpful (that's not to say I'm an expert now).
All in all, I never really felt "behind the curve," but that's probably because I wasn't worried about being behind the curve.

Also do I just show up with HR paperwork and nothing else? Or should I bring a notepad and pen or something?
