Why does this matter? Are you going to turn down the interview if told that the chances are slim? If you can impress the interviewer, and the interviewer decides to go to bat for you in front of the full committee, and if the full committee is impressed with what the interviewer says about you.... uhh...well it matters b/c it determines whether i should turn down another offer that i have that requires a decision before the SEC responsds (i already interviewed).

I turned down my offer to play with the SEC to take a position with EEOC, since I am interested in employment law. Good luck to everybody going after these SEC spots.

Yep, I had the same problem and decided not to go back to SEC for 2L summer. How badly do you want to work for SEC this summer?

has anyone accepted a position and received their clearance to start yet? Mine is just taking forever and I want a start date so was wondering. Also, i asked about start dates and they said the program is 10 weeks, depending on the budget. that doesn't mean it still might be paid, does it?

I got a bunch of forms when I first got the offer, and sent those in. The offer letter said I would be receiving more things to fill out "in the coming weeks", but I never did. Has anyone else gotten those/what are they?

I had to do fingerprints a few weeks ago but just got my start date within the last couple of days. So I assume I'm good?

i got fingeprints and sent them in early feb but they will not give me a date in DC til I get clearance. it is just making me antsy. anyone in dc get a start date?

Actually I don't even know what "clearance" involves. I sent in HR paperwork and received my starting date. Enforcement division.

i know hr is swamped but im just getting frustrated no one will respond regarding my clearance... i have emailed and left voicemails for 2 individuals this week and heard nothing

Just a word of advice from a 2010 intern (DC):
If you do not take the initiative, you will be bored. You need to seek out challenging assignments from whomever is willing to give them to you.
Go to Commission meetings whenever you can.
Talk to Maya Samms about the softball team (I was captain last year).

I did not go back because I though it would be repetitive. This summer I am interning for a federal district judge in Los Angeles, which so far has been a far superior experience. I am writing memos and orders every day. At the SEC most interns did very little writing.

I will apply for advance commitment but that is probably a non-starter. SEC only hired four kids out of law school last year. I am moving to DC when I graduate regardless of the job situation (fiancee is a student at Georgetown). I will look for positions with plaintiff side firms that represent whistleblowers. I may enroll in the Securities and Financial Regulation LLM at Georgetown.

If you want to distinguish yourself, you should publish an article on securities regulation before you graduate.
