Why does this matter? Are you going to turn down the interview if told that the chances are slim? If you can impress the interviewer, and the interviewer decides to go to bat for you in front of the full committee, and if the full committee is impressed with what the interviewer says about you.... I hope you have relevant work experience, and a clue about what you are talking about.timertimer61 wrote:what are the chances of getting an offer if given a telephone interview?

I turned down my offer to play with the SEC to take a position with EEOC, since I am interested in employment law. Good luck to everybody going after these SEC spots.

Yep, I had the same problem and decided not to go back to SEC for 2L summer. How badly do you want to work for SEC this summer?timertimer61 wrote:uhh...well it matters b/c it determines whether i should turn down another offer that i have that requires a decision before the SEC responsds (i already interviewed).Danteshek wrote:Why does this matter? Re: SEC Summer Law Honors Program
has anyone accepted a position and received their clearance to start yet? Mine is just taking forever and I want a start date so was wondering. Also, i asked about start dates and they said the program is 10 weeks, depending on the budget. that doesn't mean it still might be paid, does it?

Re: SEC Summer Law Honors Program
I got a bunch of forms when I first got the offer, and sent those in. The offer letter said I would be receiving more things to fill out "in the coming weeks", but I never did. Has anyone else gotten those/what are they?

I have an interview for a fall position with them. Can anyone enlighten me as to the sorts of questions they ask in their interview? Is it at all substantive?

Actually I don't even know what "clearance" involves. I sent in HR paperwork and received my starting date. Enforcement division.

Re: SEC Summer Law Honors Program
Just a word of advice from a 2010 intern (DC):
If you do not take the initiative, you will be bored. You need to seek out challenging assignments from whomever is willing to give them to you.
Go to Commission meetings whenever you can.
Talk to Maya Samms about the softball team (I was captain last year).
If you have any questions, ask them here with your real username. I will not respond to PMs or anonymous posts.

That's really good advice thanks. Any more? I can't think of any specific questions right now but if I do I'll post. Esp. taking initiative. Why did you not go back and where are you now? Feel free to PM me.

Re: SEC Summer Law Honors Program
I did not go back because I though it would be repetitive. This summer I am interning for a federal district judge in Los Angeles, which so far has been a far superior experience. I am writing memos and orders every day. At the SEC most interns did very little writing.teem705 wrote:That's really good advice thanks. Any more? I will apply for advance commitment but that is probably a non-starter. SEC only hired four kids out of law school last year. I am moving to DC when I graduate regardless of the job situation (fiancee is a student at Georgetown). I will look for positions with plaintiff side firms that represent whistleblowers. I may enroll in the Securities and Financial Regulation LLM at Georgetown.
If you want to distinguish yourself, you should publish an article on securities regulation before you graduate. If you are interested, you can read my article that I am publishing with a journal at the University of Maryland: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm? ... id=1857889 (not a final version, but close).
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
