Have hope, guys.

I have a feeling DC alternate slots are more likely to net interviews than any others, as Law Review grade-on people were brave enough to bid entirely DC and are going to have to cut a lot to get down to 30.

It's all very odd, especially since I though Symplicity itself wasn't supposed to fill in empty preselect spots with alternates until preselect acceptance ends.

I'm just waiting for those not invited's to turn into pre-selects!

I'm irrationally unhappy about this because I have fewer alternates now. Yes, I know that makes no sense.

So have we figured out how a non-Top 5 alternate can turn into a preselect?

1) Some firms still weren't done with their preselects

2) UVA let firms switch a Top 5 preselect with a regular preselect (i.e., maybe firm x selected student A as a preselect, but then found out that student A put them in their Top 5, so they used student A as a Top5 preselect)?

3) When you decline an interview, its irreversible

I would bet a money against that happening / being allowed... but, its one of the only 3 possibilities I can think of (though, I wasn't very good with the logic games on the LSAT)

Impossible. For the Top 5 selections, Career Services only gives firms the names of people who were not originally preselected at that firm. The firm never knows if the people they originally preselected put that firm in their Top 5. Career Services doesn't want to prejudice the firm against people who didn't put that firm in their Top 5.

There will be a few more alternates to get upgraded, since I'm declining my preselects for obvious reasons. (Not for DC, though; for some reason I got mostly alternates in DC.)

Truth. There was a one-hour period on Friday where you could sign yourself up for a specific interview slot, even if you didn't bid on the firm (much less get preselected or alternate selection).

No, it went away after an hour or so (I just happened to be logged in at the right/wrong time). In the column for interview date, the dates turned into clickable buttons (and appeared to feature multiple rooms if a firm had them) and listed the appropriate 20-30 minute time slots for interviews with radio button selection (and a submit button).

Needless to say, I did not sign myself up for interviews.

Oh, I gotchya. I thought you meant firms with open slots (e.g., didn't get enough bids) were being offered.

Ignorant 0Ls who fawn over "UVA's placement in DC," please take note of this thread.

I should probably know this - do alternates count toward the max of 30?

CS says no, but that if you get off the alternate list, they'll fix it so that you get your top 30 firms.

Other question: if you accept an alternate spot, are you taken out of the lottery for that firm?

Kevin Donovan is great, but I fault him for mentioning alternates and the lottery so often near one another. Alternates are automatic: as soon as people have declined their pre-selects, the alternate list slots interviews where possible. Once that process is done and finished, the lottery is run. So if you fail to get an alternate, you'll be in the lottery (and obviously if you get an alternate you will not be).

I'm very encouraged by his most recent email. An average of 9 pre-selects is stellar, and quite a bit better than last year. After alternates, the lottery, etc. I think people will be sitting on many more interviews than in the past.

I think this post answers our questions about alternates turning into preselects right now... I think its worth adding that if you don't get the interview as an alternate, you are still in the lottery for that particular firm - so, you might still have a good shot of getting an interview + that firm has shown interest in you
