55 judges? Are you only targeting primary markets like NYC? You should branch out into smaller secondary markets.

I literally applied to less than 10 judges in a secondary and got my first offer within 2 days of sending out applications after an interview. The competition in primary markets is a lot worse.

So far I've got an interview at spring OCI and that's it. URM. applied for quite a few jobs.

Just sent out targeted cover letters to 60+ firms in NYC - would like to stay here for the summer. Only have two grades back from Col/NYU, but have a 4.0 GPA (so far). Any ideas what my chances are for securing a firm job this summer? I have an engineering background, for what it is worth.

Thanks in advance.

Regional T2. Didn't hear anything positive from any of the 20ish small-mid sized firms I e-mailed. Got an interview with a government agency and got the job. It's for half the summer so now I'm looking to find something to split it with. Hopefully the DA, ideally a professor, if not I'll probably try to intern with the public defender's office or volunteer somewhere else.

Also, I'll probably be busing tables at night. :(

Are you applying to Judges directly from the Court website or through OSCAR? I was scrolling through OSCAR the other day and didn't see very many open positions...

DCNG 1L here.

Above median, probably sent out upwards of 50 applications to different geographic locations, ~5 interviews.

Offer from V50 firm in TX.

I go to Indiana and have a paid clerkship offer from a small Indianapolis firm. I have top grades though, and haven't heard a peep from large firms in Indiana.

If you are just sending out cover letter / resumes to a bunch of firms in an area you want to be for the summer, asking if they have anything for a 1L, how would you guys handle letting them know about your Fall grades? Do you just throw in a line that says, "My Fall GPA was 3.7" in the cover letter or something?

So Im at a MVBP school and just got offered a job with a judge over the summer, w/o interview...the chambers just called, left a voice mail and said "i like ur resume, u have a job". Problem is I'm still waiting on a Firm to get back to me, what do I do? I figured I would have an interview first, but now Im a bit lost (in a good way I guess). Thanks

congrats. Though that's strange that the judge won't even take the time to interview you or at the very least have his/her clerks interview you.

The info we got from our school was "If a judge offers, you accept" (Also MVPB). That said, with the judge going so far off the reservation in typical hiring patterns, maybe he won't be offended. Call the firm, explain your situation and ask when a decision might be made. They might be attracted to the fact that a judge had already decided on you.

One of my classmates had an interview with a fed Cir judge who preconditioned the interview on accepting on the spot. The day she was going in, she had an interview offer from a state supreme court justice. When she explained to the judge what had happened, he had no problem giving her a couple of days to decide.

Yes, there may be more deference judge to judge than judge to firm, but it does show that even those who expect a yes on the spot can be reasonable.

MVPB 1L, accepted an offer with a US Attorney's Office. Had opportunities to interview with a few federal agencies (ones that actually pay) + DOJ, but turned them down because I had already accepted the offer.

Is it too late to send a resume/cover letter to Judges for a 1L summer clerkship? I'm sure I'm late, but I suppose I'm in the same position as if I don't send it...

Am I right, or is there some sort of deadline I missed?

Im straight out of UG, but I did A LOT in UG (awards won, groups started, internships held etc.--like most LS students), I applied to a smaller hometown market (still federal) & I have previous law firm writing experience which probably helped + the name recognition of my LS.....I wish I could have something cooler on my resume, but I'm just a lucky poor kid

MVBP 1L

20+ letters to firms --> rejections / silence
10+ letters to federal judges --> 1 rejection, 1 interview, others silenced --> 1 offer --> accepted
3 letters to PI / NGO --> 1 offer --> accepted

So, 2/3 summer with the judge and 1/3 summer with the NGO

Oh well. At least I'm done with it. I should feel happy.

School in the 70's. Got a research assistant position with a professor whose class I nailed. I had to turn down an unpaid government job offer to take the research position, but I'm getting paid now, so it was worth it. Plus now I don't have to wear a suit every day!

RA position is actually a pretty sweet gig i think. You could get a potential LOR and maybe do some side research for a law review note.

TX law school. Sent 5 letters on Dec. 1. Probably best decision I made.

2 Federal judicial internships -- interviewed for 1, got 1; after summer was already planned received offer from other, had to respectuflly decline

1 large city DA's office -- 1 interview, 1 offer, declined (would have taken up most of the summer)

1 state appellate court judicial internship -- offer given via e-mail (judge is alum from school)

1 civil district court judicial internship -- silence?

4 offers, 1 ???? -- split summer with 1 federal judicial internship, 1 state appellate court judicial internship; declined DA, declined federal judicial internship, silence from other big-city civil district judge
