I apologize for the complete ignorance, but why do some matching firms start counting in 2015 and others in 2016? asking for a friend

Some are just listing salaries paid to current associates (current first years are class of 2015), while others are also including the salary that they will be paying to the incoming class of associates (class of 2016). I assume that there's no difference -- no-one is assuming that any firm will raise their current first years' salary but then pay their new first year's on the lower scale come Sept/Oct.

Depends on where you live, but a first year in nyc before insurance/401k/optional deductions probably something around $10300 a month.

found an article stating their PPP for 2005 was $1.48M. Not sure what it is now though. Does that mean it went significantly down?

There are plenty of midlaw and "regional biglaw" firms that pay 160k, so you know they will follow eventually (because they matched before). However, for these firms I wouldn't be surprised if it took months and in some cases maybe longer.
